Live Thoughts & Discussion: Double Death of the Dearly Departed

Talk away about "Double Death of the Dearly Departed!"

Please, PLEASE, do not put spoilers for upcoming season 4 episodes in this discussion. Many, MANY of the blog readers here avoid spoilers entirely. I'm sure there will be plenty in this episode alone to discuss for everyone's enjoyment :) Check out the Spoiler posts if you want to dish about how this episode is related to/foreshadowing/setting up anything in particular.

Repeated plea - Pretty, pretty, please? With a cherry on top? People still did it for Mayhem last week. I know everyone is excited, but there are lots of people who successfully avoid spoilers entirely and they want to be able to discuss the episode along with everyone else here without fear of being spoiled.

I don't think it's common etiquette to grope the corpse, but I haven't been to many funerals.

hilarious. Booth and the money! Love it !

Mary said...

she doesn't remember anyone...remember when Cam first started, she met the one cop that Booth went through all of his life story and Bones had no idea...

This is freakin' hilarious. ED and DB are awesome in this episode.

We just had a power surge, and I missed, like, five whole minutes!! It's hilarious so far, though I find it a little hard to believe that Brennan, the women who spends her life around dead people and has been to many funerals in past seasons, doesn't know how to act at this funeral.

if your not watching me? Interesting...he doesnt want her to see him flirting with anyone else....he used to not care! Yummy!

Yes, Booth knows church songs. He grew up Catholic.

Super cute. Nice to have a light episode after a couple with some serious depth.

The ending was cute...

Next week looks fun.

But we still get to see Bones bringing down walls! Two episodes in a row where she is honest about something....ROCK ON!

That was cute, especially the ending! Can someone clever post the download links when they're available? Cheers!

Super cute episode! Although it was a light episode, it was a brak from the deep bruting dark episodes last week! How cute was the end scene!

LOVED IT!! the funniest ever!! Bones has always had great one liners, but this episode was pure comedy! loved the whole eppy, and loved the ending!!! :)

MnM, I kind of saw some of Angel in that scene as well. Weird.

I'm in the process of watching Buffy and I've already watched all of Angel, so now it's really interesting to see some of Angel's mannerisms in Booth.

I loved the end, the way she explained why she'd come talk to him after he dies was sweet...in her own Bones way.

I don't know what I'm going to do with myself after the season finale, I guess re-watch all of Bones starting from season one...again. lol

i thought jack's speech was AWESOME - and angela's reactions were priceless. and sweets was funny too -especially when he was talking to the funeral guy, telling him it wasn't his fault.

i could get used to having two new bones every week.

also, anon - not sure why brennan was wearing a coat most of the time, but i would assume it was because it was dark - therefore funeral acceptable - and also because she was outside quite a bit. seriously - i loved the coat, like i love all the clothing on the show.

Anonymous said...

this was a super hilarious episode... i liked it.

but, for me, it just doesn't hold a candle to the last couple of eps (esp the last one!)

i'm already psyched for thursdays ep :)

To Anon up there: Yes, Bones knows church songs.

I'm not religious, and I know Amazing Grace. Rofl.

And I loved that this was a fun episode. :D Ending=amazing, as always.

Anonymous said...

The look on Brennan's face when Booth said the lawyer seemed "very nice"... priceless. It was the slightest bit of jealousy that so perfectly fit this episode and what has been happening in previous episodes. Loved it!

And the ending, of course. Fabulous in everyway. ED and DB are just so wonderful at acting with their looks and body language.

Laure-H. said...

Hilarious episode!

Have anybody else noticed that when Bones's talking to the guy from the caribean department, DB is laughing on the left side?

King of the funeral!
I love to find details like that!

"Bonjour" from France! Though "bonne nuit" is more appropriate for most of you!

(I'm not a 100% sure of my english, but I try to improve it by watching Bones!)

Shep said...

David sings? And acts all Angel-like? I'm dying to get home and watch this!!!

Hi this was a good episode enjoyed it, quite funny. Laure-H Bonjour I noticed that david was laughing too i don't know if that was meant or not. PS your english is great.

Anonymous said...

Erin ,ye it was a dark coat but why was she he only one wearing one=or holding it infront of her belly.Me thinks Em's trying to hide something.....

Kili Climbers said...

I think David is getting much better at playing goofy scenes - I use to cringe somewhat when he would try to be goofy, but this episode was wonderful from start to finish. I am happy for him and what this means for his long term career. :-)

oheyhowdyo said...

That ep was way fun! It took me a little while to get past the "Weekend at Bernie's" feel of driving the corpse to the lab, but once I just went along with the ridiculousness of it, I giggled throughout. Anyone notice DB walking backward into the flowerbed? I assume that wasn't intentional, but smooth recovery. Also, loved the undertaker. "You watched zombie movies on acid?" Great!

Anonymous said...

"Me thinks Em's trying to hide something....."

Me thinks the same thing, especially after "Cinderella". ;)

OMG, Anon. That's very intriguing. Please elaborate!

ye i know rite.I suspected since Fire in the Ice but she's hiding it well but not well enuf especially lst thursday the way she was walking when she was wearing the red top.Or maybe her usually flat tummy's just getting bigger and bigger for no reason......

Guys, this post is for the episode, not to discuss the stars' personal lives!
It was a really funny episode indeed and I liked it very much-and the ending scene was really sweet and it spoke to my heart, especially Brennan's words about seeing herself through Booth's eyes...But I must agree with Stephanie that Brennan has been in funerals in previous seasons and has managed to be very kind and compassionate-the first example that springs to mind is from S1,The Woman in the Garden,I think...
It seems the writers sometimes try to portray her as cranky an fastidious (I hope these are the right words),in order to bring in comic gags and funny situations, which appears a little two-dimensional compared to the amazing,multi-faceted,genius but also flawed, full of buried-deep-down emotions human being that we used to see in previous seasons...That's my only plaint (I hope I'm phrasing it right again)this season...
Bonjour Laure-H.! And kalimera from Greece!

Anonymous said...

I don't know, I looked pretty closely because of the comments and i don't think Emily looks like she is trying to hide something.... not that i'm an expert, but i think she looks pretty similar

jenny said...

Also,I noticed Booth walking in the flowerbed too-it probably wasn't intentional, but it was nice that they kept it it was really natural..ED and DB were really good,as always!I love Emily's acting every time!DB has a nice voice, hadn't heard him sing before. And "translation"! LOL!I'm dying to see some outtakes from this epi, they must be cracking up every now and then!By the way, didn't they show any Bloopers Break last night?

Anonymous said...

Hi everyone, great epi but what does everyone think about booth gambling in fantasy football and it seems like he is drinking a lot more. He brought a flask to the funeral???? Thoughts???

Dani said...

my god folks.... simmer down about Em being pregnant, a woman does look different throughout the course of a month, bloating and all that... especially skinny chicks...Sheesh, wouldnt you hate to have a slight body hang up if you worked in the entertainment industry.. blergh!

I dont know if anyone else realised, the ones that commented on her wearing a coat all through the ep, it was winter when they filmed this episode, i think she wore it only for that reason...

As for DB, i picked up on the Angel bits as well, and LMAO at it, it reminded me so much of that first ep when he's at the party with Cordi in LA and they show him doing that funky dance right in the end credits...!!

All in all, a great episode

alanna said...

I thought this episode was great! There were parts that I was laughing so hard I was crying. (Hodgins' "Oh...my....god.." for example) :)

The lightheartedness of this one was a nice break from the deeper (although, sensational!) ones in the past few weeks.

The ending was great too. Booth asking Brennan to come visit him when he's dead? *melts*

Angelator said...

I think almost everything I liked has been covered, but I loved at the beginning when Brennan, Booth, Cam and Hodgins were in the car. Brennan and Booth were arguing and Hodgins and Cam looked at each other and smiled - cute. I loved Angela's reaction to that crazy assistant hugging him after his eulogy - I love love love Angela!

And the end was adorable :)

Shep said...

This was hilarious!
Love the 'sad face' and Brennan's clapping as an imitation of sex.

Also loved Booth turning on the charm to question that lawyer. As for DB's singing, didn't butcher it like he did 'Mandy' (which was supposed to be bad), the first line was alright actually.
And I sensed an Angel vibe when he broke up the fight too, and the dancing reminded me of Cordelia's party. David is awesome.

'translated' -hee!

And, yeah I saw David laughing when interrogating the guy from the caribbean dept.

'King of the funeral!'

I was annoyed by the inconsistency again though - Brennan knows exactly how to act at a funeral; she's been to so many.

Anonymous said...

WOW I hated this episode. I really... I mean, after the brilliant fantastic Mayhem we get...
THIS???
The only thing worth saving was the last minute. The rest wasn't funny, or in character, or even remotely resembled what Bones can be when it's GOOD.
Hated it. Really.

Anonymous said...

This episode left me frustrated, especially after rewatching some of season 3 last night. Why are they treating Bones like she's stupid, ignorant? There were some funny parts, but as a whole, the only part that left me feeling like I'd watched the Bones I love was the last couple minutes. It makes me really nervous about the finale. I hope it's in the serious, emotional style of the last couple episodes, and not a trying-to-be-an-hour-long-comedy style of last night.

Wendy said...

The episode was fantastic, she looked gorgeous, and the coat wasn't out of place. If there's anything more to it, she can announce it when she's ready, but not every gorgeous, thin woman has a perfectly flat stomach... Let the woman be!

Anonymous said...

I fully agree with you, Wendy!! Plus, they showed Bones with full length body shots, and granted, she was wearing a coat, but I did not see even any sort of hint of a baby bump. The coat was pulled tightly, too. Either way, it doesn't matter because the episode was fantastic. I enjoyed not having an intern for a change, just the regular cast. It was nice just to see how comfortable they all are with each other.

L said...

Well said Wendy. God, I'd kill for a waist line like Emily's. She looked beautiful.

nina said...

this episode was hilarious! I laughed out loud so much more than I ever have while watching Bones before. So very many fantastic moments! Only bones would make a funeral this goofy. awesome.

cordy said...

The episode had me laughing tears. Really hilarious. I very much enjoyed it. And I think it was very clever to let us have a light and fluffy epi after the last emotional and heavy ones.

ha:D Emily, pregnant? that's so stupid, what? she's not hollywood' skeleton, but how can someone say that she's... whatever?
love the episode, very funny and the ending was cute :))))

What an AMAZING episode!! very very funny, a little weird and a totally cute ending!
I absolutely loved Hodgins' toast, I laughed so hard!! And Booth and Bones singing? wow! ^^
four episodes in a row that I really LOVED! great!

jenny said...

Will you please stop all that speculation about Emily? This post is meant to be for comments on the episode, not on the actors' personal lives!Wendy has always made sure the blog stays gossip-free and that's something many of us like here...
I can understand why anons above said they hated the episode and I must admit I prefer the "less funny" episodes like Mayhem, but there were a lot of funny moments and a nice case. And I agree with the poster that said that having no interns was a nice change. And I liked the constant change of atmosphere from the funny moments to the anxiety about not being discoverd while they had taken the body away,or between the "Booth singing" moment and Brennan and Hodgins in the kitchen, waiting for the results-the change in tone was..refreshing.
And I must say again, agreeing with Shep:Brennan has been in funerals before and has managed perfectly, being both serious and compassionate. Please dear writers,I want to see the Brennan I loved, the Brennan that hooked me in to this show in the first place, the unique human being we all got to know, more often...

Anonymous said...

I just have to say that I loved this episode even if some of it was a bit contrived. It made me laugh out loud and I was throughly entertained which is why I watch this show anyway. It was fun and sweet. These are the best group of actors on TV. This show has filled my heart with joy and laughter and broken it also at times. I cannot say how much I enjoy it and this website. Loved in the end scene when Booth asks Brennan to say she will visit him when she doesn't immediately commit he stops and requires her to see how important this request is to him. Then loved how she went against everything she says she believes in and agreed. I could just squeeze them!! Loved the group dynamic and all helping each other pull off the zany stuff.

Did anyone else pick up on the heartbreaking look Brennan gave Booth when she asks him about the laywer and he says "she seems VERY nice"... awwwww! he saw it hurt her and immedietly changed subject! finally she cares if hes with another girl!

Anonymous said...

yeah shes deffinetly pregnant with the husband she DOESNT have..? hollywood actresses dont get knocked up buddy.

Shep said...

Yeah, I saw that! I was like 'yesss! Finally some jealousy!'
I'm glad he picked up on it.

Angelator said...

I loved Brennan's jealousy at the lawyer comment and Booth's reaction to it. I also loved when Booth was trying to convince Brennan to talk to the brother and she said something about being a beautiful young woman. And Booth was like, "yes, well there's that AND the fact that you're an author". I just loved it!

I also loved Brennan and Hodgins doing the science experiments in the kitchen.

Anonymous said...

I laughed alot during this episode...and could care less about the inconsistencies about Brennan being at funerals before etc. It's TV...I just enjoy the hour and leave it at that.
My fave moment was when Hodgins came in and interrupted Bones, Booth and Sweets to say "Fugu" and Sweets looks all hurt and says something like "that's really not nice." and walks away....TJ Thyne and JF Daly both have awesome comic timing!

firefairyangel said...

I know most people are commenting (on other boards at least) that they hated this episode and it wasn't serious enough, but that's what I loved about it. The show would get boring if it was serious case after serious case, all the time. Every once in a while, we need something different.

I thought this episode was hilarious, albeit unrealistic. But I'm finding this season, moreso than getting annoyed with the show, I'm getting annoyed with the fans. Everyone complains they want more character, and when they give us that, we want more case. We want more humour, then don't like it because it's not serious enough.

I have to say, best ending line ever.

*Vodzu* said...

oh come on, you`ve got to love Hodgins "Oh God, Hank, he`s leaving us, wheres he going from here, who knows"

or Booth stealing the 20 bucks

or the sad face

or imitating sex

or Booth`s singing

or drilling in the eyeball :D

or the ending

but they really make Dr.B stupidier than she is, I mean in season 1 pilot she attended a funeral and acted normal, what happened in that 4 years? she forgot everything?

Shep said...

The drilling of the eyeball grossed me out more so than usual. Not sure why, I'm used to the high ick factor of the show but that was just.. eeew!

I also loved the part when Cam put the shades on the guy's eyes and then made him smile!

Mary said...

I loved that Bones agreed to his "request." But more then that the compliment that she so freely gave him. She is just all over the thinly veiled comments these past weeks....LOVIN IT!

Anonymous said...

I'm with firefairyangel. It was a good, fun episode. We can't expect them to have everything in every episode. we would be exhausted if every episode was like 'con man in the meth lab'. the variation is what makes the show fun. enough with the nitpicking. Enjoy the ride!

Anonymous said...

I can’t say this was my favourite episode i didn’t think it was all that funny and it was a bet random but it was ok overall loved the ending

Love temperance

alanna said...

I told my friend today that I hope someone eventually tells Angela that she had a dead body smushed up against her window. Yummy. :)

I can't get enough of the ending! Booth putting his arm around Brennan's shoulders brought me back to a scene in which he did the same thing and the 'everything happens eventually' line was brought into the light. Foreshadowing maybe? :)

Chenoa said...

This was a really fun episode after a long time!! The whole running around (with a corpse) bit was hilarious! :D
And watching DB break into song was astounding :D What with the jigging and all!

Seriously, can we have Bones twice a week from now on? Like pretty please with DB covered in whipped cream?
(Sorry, can't wait for the season finale :D)

Stephanie said...

Bones twice a week would be awesome! Though I suppose the cast would get tired. Probably the writers, too :(

So I missed, like, twenty minutes due to a power outage. We had a huge power surge and it knocked out my TV for half the episode. I think there's still a bit in the middle I haven't seen yet, but I was cracking up at all of the "translated" code at the beginning. So funny. Oh, and Emily sung again (even though it was only a few seconds) so yay! I kept waiting for someone to realize they stole the body and get them in huge trouble.

Not gonna comment on Emily cuz I accidentally did in the other post since I didn't read this until today, but to the person that said Hollywood actresses don't get pregnant outside of marriage...where did you get that from? There's Reese Witherspoon (who was 7 months pregnant at her wedding,) Jessica Alba (4 or 5 months at hers,) Katie Holmes (her daughter attended her wedding,) Nicole Richie (one baby, one on the way, no marriage,) and Halle Berry (who has no intention of marrying her baby's dad.) It happens all the time. Just wondering why you said that...

jenny said...

It's true that funny episodes are nice to have now and then,to lessen the tension and make us laugh...But it seems we've had far too many of them this season.Which isn't necessarily bad in and of itself, but the main problem in them is that the writers, trying to put comic situations every two minutes, are compromising the characters integrity...especially Brennan's this season..It's so unfair to all of us who got to know her and like her from the beginning, got to know what an amazing person she is,both intellectually and sentimentaly...I admit I only started to watch the show this summer, because this is when it aired for the first time here in Greece, but I started watcing it from the beggining, from S1,all the way to S3(they showed a new wpisode every night until September!)so I learned and loved the characters from the beggining and I consider myself to be a "hard-core" fan(although some may disagree). My favourite season is S2,of course(like many other "die-hard" fans,it seems) and the first and main reason I started to watch the show *regularly* and finally got so obsessed with it was Brennan(of course the intresting cases, the B&B romance and UST and the rest of the characters added up to that, but they came afterwards). Her personality was fascinating to me, so multidimensional and unique...If I wasn't afraid I might be misunderstood about my sexual orientation I'd even say I kind of fell in love with her...So for me to see the writers treat her like this in some of this season episodes is...almost painful.
This is the most important part, but it's also true that sometimes the show on a whole suffers from that somewhat drastic change of heart of the writers. We were used to getting "deep" episodes, episodes were every scene and every little line served a purpose and was adding up to the rest of the episode and the previous ones perfectly,to create a whole that left you amazed AND with a huge grin on your face that came both from your brain and your heart, not from superficial jokes.
So I can definitely see where the people that say they hated the episode are coming from.I don't agree with them,I don't think I 'll ever connect the word "hate" with Bones and the episode was funny and had its merits,in its own way.But I really really hope the writers will find it in their hearts (and minds) to give us back what they got us used to...It's like someone giving a child a diamond every year on his birthday as a present and suddenly, one year, decides to give him a Swarowski crystal-it's always beautiful and better than the tones of cheap glass around, but the child can't forget the beauty of the diamonds he used to get...
I hope all this made sense...

mcrcolombia said...

The great thing about Bones is how it manages to cover all kinds of moods. the show is all drama one week and the another is making us cry of laughts. it has been always like that. so i dont get why people complain about a funny plot, this is sometimes refreshing.
love the end, bones' sad face, booth all touchy with bones in the last episodes, Cam's dark glasses...
hilarious.

mcrcolombia said...

but i agree with Jenny about Brennan, this character has so much potential!!!

Anonymous said...

Jenny : I totally second what you said :)

Jeannie said...

About the funerals and Brennan's proper behavior: Not sure if this counts as an explanation but the season 1 funerals were all funerals of victims, and we know how much Brennan respects those and how much she can relate. The first "social" funeral we've seen her at was Booth's last year (if I'm not mistaken) and she was all kinds of awkward during that one, too. It worked for me - the premise was that Brennan didn't see the need to attend a day-long wake for somebody she had no relation to whatever.

As for the episode itself, I love the fact that Bones can make me both laugh and cry and it so unpredictable. After all the serious character episodes we've had lately, this was a welcome break.

Angela said...

I rewatched this episode and I laughed like a crazy again! some parts are really hilarious!
There is a line I loved and I think no one mentioned it yet: Angela to Hodgins after his toas when he was interrogating the girl "Hodgins what are you, possessed by Brennan??" ahahah it was great!!!
