Live Thoughts & Discussion: The Critic in the Cabernet

Once again, many of you have seen "The Critic in the Cabernet," thanks to the early airing in Canada. Please hold yourselves back just one hour longer so that people who like to live post can do so without knowing what's going to happen.

And, the perpetual warning for the next couple of weeks:

Please, PLEASE, do not put spoilers for the finale in this discussion. Many, MANY of the blog readers here avoid spoilers entirely. I'm sure there will be plenty in this episode alone to discuss for everyone's enjoyment :) Check out the Spoiler posts if you want to dish about how this episode is related to/foreshadowing/setting up anything in particular.

Repeated plea - Pretty, pretty, please? With a cherry on top? I know everyone is excited, but there are lots of people who successfully avoid spoilers entirely and they want to be able to discuss the episode along with everyone else here without fear of being spoiled.

They are pushing the boundaries of ick with each episode!

omg the comments Bones makes are hysterical. Especially when everyone in the lab found out!

Shep said...

Yeah, I loved the expressions of complete shock on their faces.

Much like the expression on my face right now! I've payed hardly any attention to the case!

tybonium said...

I'm sure I missed some important dialog in regards to the case...I just love everyone's reaction to the news.

I was just thinking I have NO IDEA what is going on in the case I am so preoccupied! I'm glad it's not only me:)

Oh. my. gosh. This episode was past amazing. I CANNOT wait until the finale next week! :)

That was THE best! I was so worried and am so thrilled with this episode. It was perfect. Touching funny. it is a shame they wasted such a good plot when no one gave a **** about who killed who!

I think having people actually drink the human remains really pushed the ick factor for me. It's the first time I actually was completely disgusted during an episode.

I am going to re-watch the ending so many times (dvr's are awesome). Booth looking lost and searching for Brennan was very moving.

Anonymous said...

Absolutely AMAZING!

The Stewie thing was worked in very well... it made complete sense given Booth's condition.

I cried throughout the last 10 minutes...

Booth looked like a lost puppy looking for his owner when they were prepping him...he was searching for Brennan through the glass. Then later, he had tears in his eyes when he told Bren she should have his "stuff".

*SIGH*

I LOVED THIS EPISODE!!!!!!!

It’s past 2am, and I feel completely awake as if I’ve just had 10 cups of coffee! They can’t just end it like that! I’m so frigging scared about the finale now!

*takes deep breaths*

Erm…can’t say much about the case since I can’t really remember. And it wasn’t even solved. Don’t think it was anyway. That image of Booth going into surgery has been burned into my mind.

Great Fisher & Hodgins experiment moment with the watermelons! And I loved that Angela/Brennan conversation: ‘We’re here one minute then we’re gone the next. You should know that better than anybody. If you keep living trying to protect yourself, nothing is ever gonna touch you’. In Brennan’s response, you could see that what Angela said did affect her.

I thought the scenes with Stewie would be very comic and focused on, but instead I was so scared for Booth! They were done very well and made sense with Booth’s condition. When Brennan said ‘brain tumour’ I actually had to stifle a small scream (lucky I didn’t wake the house up) even though I knew it would be something like that and Booth would be fine.

I absolutely loved the scene in the hospital room between Booth and Brennan: it was so sweet and tender and the looks in their eyes just broke my heart! They both looked so lost and had tears in their eyes and I almost cried! David is the master of the sad puppy-dog eyes!

This next week is going to be the longest ever!

Jilly said...

I was bawling...for a second in the hospital hallway, I expected Booth to say something like.."and make sure Parker has a chance to meet him/her." I would have lost complete control.

The way he looks at her...oh god...it brings me tears just thinking about it.

On a lighter note, when you have a chance, go back at look at their first exchange when they're playing the association game. Hilarious how after Booth says "whoa" (in reaction to what she said, not as part of the game), she says "horse." And then she says "horse" again later in the episode when he says "whoa" when they're not even playing the game. I don't know why, but that is a riot to me and I doubt everyone even noticed...every moment goes by so fast.

...and that one exchange in the car where it ended with them giving each other these cute/funny glances and looks. I love their car scenes!!!

Back to the end -- as someone else said, when he's looking for her...that look of vulnerability. Heartbreaking....

I could go on and on...

amc815 said...

Brennan knows who is Stewie or she was just concerned about Booth and kicked the "I don't know what that means" out... ahahahahah
Loved the whole episode!!! The psychology test was funny and shocking!!! The watermelon, final minutes, the dancing phalanges return... Oh, and a new one: spatial disorientation! The whole episode was just great! Made me cry! The eyes meeting at the end, in the hospital scene, this is love! :)

Also, Booth totally looked like an 11 year old boy when he was looking for Brennan...even my roommate though so! It was SO cute!

STUPID TORNADOES!!!! There was a tornado warning for a city that is NO WHERE NEAR HERE and they interrupted all the parts in between Bones telling the gang what is wrong with Booth and when Booth finally sees Bones in the window. STUPID!! Now I have to wait until tomorrow to watch it on Hulu.

ugh, I definitely had tears in my eyes when they were in the hallway and he told her to have his 'stuff'.

That episode was INTENSE though and OMG I can't wait until next Thursday.

No other show is even entertaining anymore after watching Bones lately.

Also, HELL YEAH Zach will be back for the finale. I don't know what I'm going to do after 8pm CST next Thursday. I guess go buy season 4 when it comes out on DVD and watch it over and over and over. Haha

Shep said...

Loved the vulnerability not only in Booth's eyes, but Brennan's too when she was telling everyone about Booth's condition.

Not sure, Wendy did say not to in the Happy Bonesday post. I think it would be best if you didn't. If people have done their googling, they shoudl be able to find them! ;D

Anonymous said...

Lets just say absolutely AMAZING!!! Needless to say i can't even remember who the killer was. But the end when he was looking for her and her crying with everyone else. I also liked how they handled the baby thing. I mean you were thought to believe that it was going to change their relationship forever but really it was sort of an impluse on brennans side. Stewie was absolutely believable. I can't remember why i doubted it for a second. Next week looks awesome in fact the last two seconds of the promo have been on constant reply in my mind as i'm sure that it will be for the next week.

I was ... amazed.
Every single actor/character in this episode just knocked it out of the park. KUDOs to them, to the writers, to everyone.
I don't watch TV. I don't even own a TV! I read. I'm a writer.
And BONES came out of nowhere and ambushed me one night online. They had me at hello? :)
Thank God for hulu et al -- and for all you guys on this blog with Wendy. It is better than a blast to be obsessed with the lot o' ya.
It's a privilege to see such good work applauded (and weak work appalled!).
WONderful episode tonight.
On every level.
Amazing.

I've seen the promo about 20 times already! I'm going to sleep now with Dr Feelgood playing in my head. Can't wait for next week!!

OMG! this show is such a roller coaster of a ride....

One minute you're cruising along, having a loud chuckle and a giggle here and there and then WHAMO!

Such intense emotion....4 particular moments caused a mammoth tear slippage!
1. Sweets reaction at the hospital
2. Bones trying to calm herself with 'statistically he should be fine'
3. Booth's eyes searching for Brennan...and the calmness that came over him once she was there.
4. And the final fade out....

....more tear slippage just thinking about it!

Mary said...

I just realized I am absolutely scared out of my mind. Last year the episode BEFORE the season finale was AMAZING and had booth in a similarly perilous situation.....and the finale was an absolute disapointment. With such a perfect episode I think we all might be set up for bitter disapointment!

one word: ABSOLUTELY-POSITIVELY-AMAZING!

I don't know how I am gonna live after next Thursday... I'll have nothing to look forward to for next 3 months.
I mean ya, I am getting married in June, ya I am going to Italy on my honeymoon...so what?

I NEED MY WEEKLY DOSE OF BONES!

Don't Call Me Bones! said...

Lol @ no one knowing what was going on with the case, b/c I said the exact same thing earlier...I was like..."I don't even know what's going on here, I'm so pre-occupied". I love that I'm in great company!

I LOVED Booth's reaction when he was in the interrogation room with Brennan and he saw Stewie! I don't care if he was talking to a cartoon character or not...him stating he couldn't just be the donor of Brennan's baby, without being involved...oh, that was good stuff!

And then, when Booth was searching for Brennan before his surgery...so, so touching! When he finally sees her...my goodness, the way he looks at her...and her looks in return...really, really awesome!

PS...I love how emotional Sweets was, in reaction to Booth going into surgery.

There are so many other moments, but I'd probably have to enter scenes from the entire episode! Loved it!!

wow wow wow wow wow!!!!

yeah, of course all the other awesome htings in this episode were left in the dust in that moment they were prepping booth for surgery and he was searching nd searching for her.. and then saw her... the looks on their faces...

i think david boreanez might be the best 'face actor' i have ever seen. his eyes are beyond powerful. i didnt know they could have even more depth of feeling then they already ahve. that was like, a new level of amazing acting for both of them.

I AM ALSO FREAKING OUT

There are so many good things about this episode that have already been covered well by the other commenters. I will say, I caught both "Whoa/Horse" interactions. A friend texted me with "whoa. horse. lol!"

I liked Cam calling Booth out in his office. The facial expression (especially Hodgins) were hilarious when Brennan was telling them about wanting a baby.

Booth's prep was good, too. My aunt had a similar tumor and had a 99% chance that it wouldn't work, so she went out fighting for that 1%... I think I teared up a little for the same reasons as everyone else, but also because I KNOW what that feeling is like.....

I thought the Stewie thing was done believably. It was much better than my knee-jerk reaction to the spoiler many months ago.

I'm glad that Sweets acknowledged that Booth is his friend.

NOW, the question I have is this: if Teddy Parker was a hallucination, did Brennan ACTUALLY interact with him, or did Booth simply imagine that whole exchange? Food for thought, anyway.

I sent a message to my friend with my thoughts on the preview for next week. I'm also curious what the time interval is between the episodes is because in the previews Booth has no spots where his hair would have been shaved for surgery. I'm curious if that has anything to do with any of the spoilers HH let out on how the situation is handled.

What an amazing episode. I loved the quirky comments from everyone. I loved that they (squints and Sweets) all know what is really going on between the two of them, but yet they won't admit it. Can't wait for next week. At the end of the promo I actually squealed! My friend that was watching it with me must of thought I was nuts.

I just wonder one thing...is Booth part vampire like Angel, because he heals very fast. Last year the episode prior to the finale he is shot and everyone thinks he is dead and then he is healthy as a horse. Horse....LOL! And now this time he has brain surgery and next week he is back to normal...

(I reposted this, because I was afraid of a comment I made at the end would be considered a spoiler for anyone that didn't watch the promo for next week)

ooooh my goodness. I am speechless. that episode had me laughing so hard at some points.. and then by the end I was an absolute teary mess. and the promo for next week? gahhhhh I dont even think my brain is even functioning at this point I am so OVERWHELMED WITH EXCITEMENT/ANXIETY/OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG

Amanda said...

Mysti: I noticed the healing powers, too (and the massive hair growth), however it should be noted that we don't know how long is in between the two episodes. Last year there was more than one week between the two final episodes, so it could be a day, it could be a month. We won't know until Thursday. :)

wow THANK YOU su for that link! and thank you also to mickey for that screen cap, my dvr cut off the promo. but when i saw it zomg i'm going craaaaaaazyyy!!!!!! I can't stop thinking about it! i must have seen it about 922034809839 times by now.

i'm still a little suspicious of how this whole b&b thing is going to go down. i know they say its not a "cheat" but i just dont trust them! I feel like there's something else going on here, because booth cant be A-OK after major surgery.i dono i guess we'll find out next week! i cant waaaiiiitttt

RE: healing from brain surgery. I didn't catch what kind he was having buy my mom had brain surgery for a tumor that involved only lasers. No head shaving and a very quick recovery time, all things considered.

Guys, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE no more comments about the promo for next week. That most definitely qualifies as spoilers, even the mention of who will be in it!!!!

Some of us avoid spoilers (including promos) entirely. I came here to discuss THIS episode but now I can't because I've already spoiled myself to no limit with the comments I read before I intended to post mine. I am sure no one meant any harm and everybody was simply getting a little overexcited but please, you are driving the spoiler-free people out of the episode discussion if you keep posting spoilers like that.

Since Wendy is not able to set up a promo discussion post right now, I suggest you guys use the news/spoiler post she made yesterday for the promo discussion. Would that work?

Thanks guys! Not trying to be a spoilsport here but I'd rather not know anything about next week before Bonesday. ;-)

Is it just me..or does Booth punch Jared in the promo????

Anonymous said...

I slow-mo'd on the dvr & and I think you are right about who he punches...
Interesting, no?

Angela said...

oh my gooood!! i've seen the episode yesterday and i could not wait to talk about it!

Saying that this episode and the last minutes in particular were intense is an understatement! I was actually crying! oh god. What. an. episode!!!
These two are really really amazing actors!! i can't even describe what I felt since Brennan dragged him out of the interrogation room. their facial expressions were great and touching. Heartbreaking. The hospital scene when Booth was looking for her was heartbreaking! he looked so scared and lost and I loved seeing his smile when he finally sees her! And the vey last scene and the hand holding... so cute!! ok I'm babbling now ;-)

Let's go back to the lighter side. I loved Brennan's bluntness when she told everyone about the baby and Booth... and I loved the other's expressions! And the talks... Booth-Cam and Angela-Brennan. Specially the last ones, I really missed some A-B girl moments in this season!

And Stewie? Great! Loved the interrogation scene!

Tha case... oh i really can't remember anything! only that it was absolutely disgusting!! the cases when there is liquid/melting stuff are always the most icky!!

and... the dancing phalanges are back!! I laughed sooo hard when I saw her!! hahah that was funny!!

What a great episode. I think I went through all possible emotional states during these 45 minutes - laughing, crying, hyperventilating (I know that's no emotion, but who cares) . The ending was absolutely heartbreaking and left me shell shocked. I was a sceptic in regards to Stewie, but have to say even that worked out just fine. The case was - wait, was there a case? - just kidding - it was ok but of course not my main focus.

Angela said...

forgot to say... I was REALLY worried about this episode! most of all because I did not like the baby thing at all (I still don't)! But even if I had the strong wish to go and punch Brennan in some scenes, as well as go and give Booth a massive hug, I think they managed it very very well! And Stewie too! It was believable and important for the plot! I am happy and satisfied with this one!
Now I'm soo freaking out about the finale but that's another story ;-)

tybonium said...

Ok, so here are the highlights for me:

1.Brennan breaking the news to the gang, and their reactions.
2.Angela talking to Brennan (both times, but the first encounter was more fun)
3.Cam talking to Booth in his office. "you want to do it without really doing it. but it's still doing it even if you aren't doing it the way it's supposed to be done" also the "a piece of you line" was nice.
4. Fisher's insistence that his sperm could be use.
5.The watermelon experiment.
6.Of course the whole end with Booth in the hospital bed looking for Brennan. And him wanting her to have his baby, and the hand holding.

This episode is great, so I am sure I left something out. This was actually an interesting case (which I only noticed the second time through). It's a shame it doesn't get more attention, but there is a lot going on.

I too was very worried when I first heard about this episode, so it was a totally shock to me. I'm hoping I have the same results from the finale.

I can't believe we're almost at the end of the season! Time has gone so quickly yet so slowly. I'm counting on HH, he did say on his twitter 'if fans hate it, it's TOTALLY my fault.' -yes, it is Hart, so better make it good!

I do feel this season has been somewhat all over the place, I loved the solid serial killer arcs we've had in past seasons. But there have been some great character moments in some episodes so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for next week.

sciencefan said...

Great comments everyone - took the words right out of my mouth except for my second favorite moment of the ep! I loved when Sweets puts his head in his hand and says, "Let me gather my thoughts for a moment" when B&B don't understand why a baby would affect their working relationship. TOO FUNNY!

My favorite part was when Bones cried as she talked to the group in the hospital.

Can't wait for next week!

Dancing Phalanges said...

I loved this epi -- especially since my favorite phrase "dancing phalanges" returned for seconds!--but have a couple things that leave me unsettled (aside from the fact that Booth is going into the O.R.)
Didn't Brennan respond to Teddy Parker in the cemetery back in Hero? And, more problematic, I agree with Jilly in that Booth should have said something more profound than "take my stuff." The fact that there was no mention of Parker at all during the whole pre-op thing seemed to me to be a glaring omission. Obviously Booth was distraught, but he should have said something like "Make sure Parker knows I love him," or "Make sure Parker gets to know his little brother or sister." It would have made the moment seem much more real to me.
That said, I am VERY excited for next week!!

Anonymous said...

after it has had time to settle, i really loved the episode. the characterizations seemed quite accurate to me. I thought the baby thing could be OOC, but they did a great job with Brennan. and I thought Booth's response was totally believable.
the final scenes were lovely and heartbreaking.

Last night I had a party with my friends, and I went home before the end of the party ( where a very famous dj was invited) just to watch this episode! And i don't regret it! it was awesome..can't wait until next week...
And unlike most of you, I like when the episodes aires first in Canada ( I'm in France, so the sooner the better)..
and by the way.. sorry for my english...( like i said i'm french...)

Anonymous said...

I have mixed feelings for this episode...some parts i really liked while some left me quite unsatisfied....i was too worried about the whole Stewie thing..n how they were gonna pull it of to speculate about what was gonna happen in this epi...but now that we got to see the final product...it left me a tad unsatisfied....

First of all the case(compared to the previous episodes) was really good though it got side-lined cuz of the whole baby-thing...there was sum really gud science stuff..n the Hodgins-Fisher experiment was hilarious...there were sum gr8 Cam-Booth n Angela-Brennan scenes...the BB sessions with Sweets were really good too...and most importantly
The Stewie thing was pulled of (like Emily said in her interview) in a very realistic way..it did make sense..his apprehensions of not being involved were reflected very well in those scenes..though they were his hallucinations...After his lil speech at the end of SiTW...it wud have been very OOC for him if he wasnt involved with their child

But wot left me unsatisfied was that booth really dint reason it out with Brennan at all..which he does all the time...he has a perfect "heart" explanation for everything.....sure his sperm n her egg wud produce a world class baby..but babies arent just about science...i did expect him to explain her that...i thought we saw a very Season 1 Brennan in this episode...science all the way....though i liked how she dropped the whole baby-thing when she figured out that there was sumthn wrong with Booth...

that said i wud really be disappointed if they wind up the whole baby thing and the hospital stuff in 5-min n forget about it the entirely in the season finale..like they did in PiTH...

GREAT repeat GREAT Episode. The acting of the whole cast was superb especially David and Emily. How neither one of these two have ever been nominated or won an EMMY is great mystery to me. Since Booth's surgery outcome was left unresolved I am most certain that the LOVE SCENE happens while he is under Anesthesia and therefore is not real.
BUMMER!!!. Really hope I am wrong but JMO!

This episode is officially my favorite bones episode. It used to be the verdict...but now...this one.

Boreanaz was hilarious. In fact, everyone was hilarious. Great job.

And I'm tickled to see Ms. Belcher will be in next week's episode. I'm surprised (with her excellent comic timing) that she wasn't in last night's...but hey. I'm not gonna complain. I loved just about every scene.

I detest the cartoon and the character featured in last night's episode, but Boreanaz saved the day, and carried off those scenes despite the idiocy of the writers in using that icky thing from that (nope not even gonna give 'em a plug) stupid show.

I liked the episode, but it seemed like they tried to fit everything plus the kitchen sink in it. I know the cases are what holds bones together, but I think in this episode I wouln't have minded skipping the case and dealing with the personal relationships of our main characters.

STOP POSTING SPOILERS!!!! Even if they were in the promo, not all of us watched it.

as someone who reads all the sides and spoilers the moment they come out, i am sorry if i ever post spoilers. i try not to. i start just blending everything on this blog (which is the only blog i really read, and i check it at least once a day!) in my head. I will continue to try very hard not to spoil!

so, that said: i have to say that the rubbery bones and the oogey red stuff was AWESOME. some of the corpses this season have been so out there! sometimes its a lot to take but i think if youre gonna be into a show called bones you gotta love when its kinda cool like that shot of the skull being pulled out of the barrel!

also, i do feel wierd that the case was totally sidelined. they just left the guy in the interrogation room with no real verdict as to his guilt. with a poor defenseless cartoon baby! and i agree that it was frustrating how VERY clueless bones can be and how booth wasn't like 'a baby would not affect our working relationship' and not talkign to her about why that would matter... very wierd.

but then i thought about it, and, he is madly in love with her. so of course if she's asking for his sperm and acting like she was acting he would just totally sacrifice all his emotional hangups and pretend everything was ok to make her happy. which is pretty obvious by the way he ran away when anyone wanted to talk about it.

sigh. i love this show.
