Shame on Hart Hanson! The way that he has been playing with Bones-fans is ashaming! I don't want to spolier the episode, but I don't think the real "believers" could love this season finale, it's a "Pain in the Heart" again. A Bones-fan from Catalonia.

Stephanie said...

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "the real believers," but I am a huge Bones fan and a huge Booth and Brennan shipper, and I actually really loved this episode. I know that doesn't seem to be the popular opinion, though.

Of course, I also liked "Pain in the Heart." I didn't like what they did to Zack, but it was a good episode.

B said...

Does anyone know how to report our comments directly to Hart Hanson? He said he would take responsibility if fans didn't like the finale and I intend to give him a piece of my mind.

Anonymous said...

i loved it until the last minute of the episode! But it wasn't what HH promised.

lorapalmer said...

Please do not make strong judgement here before the show actually airs live in the US! Scaring other fans this way does not a good thing. Everyone has the right for their opinion, but please be a little patient and use the Spoiler chat for writing out these feelings if you've seen the episode. (By the way good for everybody, who've seen it already!)
I know it is hard but any opinion that shows you've seen it is really frustrating for those who haven't. Until 8 PM, let's discuss our after-thoughts at the Spoiler chat. Thank you very much!!

Antonio said...

I loved it for what it was but a whole season building up to WHAT? NUTHIN! although i loved the ending! i was annoyed that Zack was given very little screentime and didn't have a scene with Hodgins and I HATED CLARK!

Stephanie said...

lorapalmer, I completely understand that frustrating feeling. If I were a stronger person, I wouldn't have stayed up until 3 AM to watch online early, haha. I was trying not to say anything here, but I felt like the thread would explode soon, and I wanted to get in my response to the first comment.

I promise there's no reason to be scared. Go into it with an open mind, and I think you'll enjoy the episode :)

Anonymous said...

I wholeheartedly agree with you, Stephanie. Put everything else aside and just watch and take the episode for what the characters say.

I honestly loved it and thought it was quite well written

Please! No discussion here until after the air time (1.25 hours to go for the east coast). The pre-ep discussion belongs in the spoiler posts.

Shep said...

I'm scared to press that little 'play' button on the video! - and not just because of what people have said about the finale. Combined excitement and fear is only what's keeping me up at this hour. (That and coursework, but that doesn't count)

53 mins left!

Shep said...

@B - if you've got Twitter, you could always complain to Hart on there!

I've been looking for a way to contact HH for ages now. Alas, no luck. (I don't have Twitter.)

The worst episode ever imagined after 4 years watching bones. I really feel they have been cheating on me. Awful and very, very, very disappointing.

I did not mean to post this so early... sorry! Forgot to change the post time.

Stephanie, and the fact doesn't even matter that I'm a European gal here. :) But I am supporting completely the folks over the sea and everybody who tries to stay spoilerfree, because that's really tough if we crazily-obssessed people just can't keep this to us! Every season finale creates great expectations, so the reactions are always very strong. I know I would be devastated, if I would read the comments accidentally and would found out some major plotline or twist I wanna find out from the episode.
So, let's just be strong and supportive, instead of ruining the fun. Like, it's hard to believe it is the 83th episode already! Who woulda thought that this year goes so fast??
What are your thoughts about the number of next seasons episodes? I am sure it will get a full season order but with how many episodes? 22/24 maybe?
Slightly OT:
Theres's a TV-blogger here in Hungary who is very much obsessed with American tv-shows. The guy's great, he writes the funniest recaps in his 'recap-blog' (I couldn't really describe with better words) and his fav. band is Mötley. He doesn't watch Bones regularly, but he will surely watch this episode. I am crossing my fingers hoping he will write an entry about it and will have good opinion. I know it won't help the ratings in the US, but I am so happy that Bones is an international success (at least I know it is in Europe) and we can also watch it here. Even the worst episode of this show is so much better than a lot of out there! I am proud for being its fan and very thankful for being part of this community. :)
*wipes happy tears*

Okay, Whoa! *grins*
Love the beginning for sure!

Sophie,

I didn't even see that! Good eye :)

Anyone else hear Booth say "I love it when you do that" to Bones during the hookup? lol

Shep said...

Yeah, I did, Rachel. EEE!!

I started the episode late. Why is everyone not themsleves???

Shep said...

I'd forgotten how adorable Zack is!

Kilian said...

why is everyone not themselves?????

Amanda said...

Anon & Kilian: We don't know yet....

Shep said...

Is it me, or has this episode gone faster than any other?

Kilian said...

thank god, I thought I'd missed where they explained it, I was getting so mad at myself.

Mokette said...

Come on people, you gotta keep an open mind. Okay, it's kind of a cheat from Hart that he told us that the sex wasn't going to be a dream nor a hallucination or wathever, but I think that when you look at the spoilers he gave us (like the fact that the sex was for the baby) it all makes sense by the end of the episode. I watched the episode last night and was really shocked but at my second viewing of it, I actually enjoyed it a lot! There's a lot of great references of past seasons or what fans thought would happen (like the Sweets being Gormogon reference). Hart was right when he said it was a love letter to us, the fans: it proves that he listens and reads our appreciation of the show and that he noticed when we were talking about who we think was the gravedigger or gormogon.

And in top of the great humour and references, the ending is suprising and breathtaking. So yeah, enjoy it with an open mind and you'll be able to really see what Hart wanna to give us.

Shep said...

OMG!! NO WAY! Hart, you cannot end it like this! I refuse to believe it. NO F***ING WAY!!!!!!!!!!

WHYYYYYYYYY???????

I think I just had a small heart attack!
I can't believe this!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sciencefan said...

there is still 10 min left but i really don't like it. i watch this show b/c i love the characters, but they are nowhere to be found. I am just so sad that i looked forward to this great finale for 5 weeks only for it to be a non-bones episode

Shep said...

*whines* Booth!!!!!

I gasped when I saw Booth at the end! And the look in his eyes - *cries*

Anonymous said...

I thought the same thing as you yesterday, sciencefan. But you know what? You'll figure out that it was a pretty good episode after watching it.

Anonymous said...

After all the hype what a huge disapointment!!! Not only the whole episode but the sex scene primarily.
After all of us waiting four seasons to see this it was a major dud that lasted all of 20 seconds. The sex that Brennan had with Sully was more erotic than with the man she so truly loves. HH stated many times that Booth and Brennan were going to be in bed naked together. She didn't look naked to me. In seasons 1 and 2 she was naked in bed with the relationships she had. That she was writing about Jared killing the man to save her makes me surely think that Booth's brother is going to be involved with Brennan sexually in season 5 especially if Booth continues with him not knowing who she is. Let us see if she is naked when this happens. TO HH! I for one will never believe you again. You made all us loyal Bones fans look like suckers again.

Amanda said...

oh $hit.

That is all.

sciencefan said...

OH MY GOD!

So was she writing the whole episode or was it Booth's dream?

Wow is all i can say - i hope it is temporary.

Lilian said...

actually I agree that this is a nice episode...Sure, this wasn't "real", that HH did cheat his way out; but this was a lovely alternate reality episode!

And the ending is just surprising...

Anonymous said...

I liked the episode. Very much! I thought that it was just the way that booth asnd brennan would act if they were married. I'm still very confused if it was booths dream or brennan writing. My take is that brennans writing was what hodgens was voicing over and the rest was booths dream. It kills me that he can't remember her. All i'm wondering is how this will play out next season. I thought that the scene was nice plus brennan being pregnant at the end was a nice touch. I loved it all the way.

Rolywa said...

I thought it was really cute! BUT I knew what was gonna happen beforehand so it made me more open minded.

I am mad at the way they promoed it though....it was so mean for us to think it was gonna be real when it wasnt. hopefully next year some new developments will be made since I took the episode as her story and her finally confronting her fears about loving Booth.

BTW I do NOT think this "amnesia" will be long lasting!

tess said...

wtf was that.

THIS "WHO ARE YOU" BANANAS BETTER BE TEMPORARY!!!!!!!!!!

grawrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I swear, I'm so blazing mad right now.

this better be temporary and everything better work freaking out.

omgomgomg.
there is NO WAY they can rebuild 4 seasons of material.
omg i'm going to cry.

i'm so obsessed its pathetic.

Anonymous said...

Having had the luxury of watching it several times I thought this episode was very creative, but it was just not a strong enough storyline for a finale.... imo maybe a season opener? IMO CitC was more of a finale than this episode. We love those endings with 5 mins of B&B, we like a lot of ‘heart’. In tEitB we only have a ‘real’ ending of a minute or so of B&B.... I think you always expect so much from a finale, and when you talk about endings....CitC delivered. I saw the tEitB ending as short, sharp and shocking, but for me it was Bones-lite in time!
...but what did I enjoy?
B&B: I just love seeing them together....They never wavered as a couple-‘the centre held’ through all the innuendos and suspicion...oh and dressing gowns!
Brennan: touching Booth frequently and her ‘satisfying go around’ with her husband @ 5am!
Booth: in bed saying...’I love it when you do that!’Calling Brennan ‘Bren’ and describing her as Iceland
All the Squints roles: ....esp Wendell and Clark..and Vincent being too lovely for jail lol!
Jared: wearing the cocky belt buckle- Booth-lite tho!
Sweets: he’s a barman so he’s practically a psychologist!
....and my favourite....loved to see it real: Brennan and Booth having to forgo their nightly glass of wine!

Ps...interesting credits @ the beginning....will this be the new format?
Pss. I would be interested to know what people thought about them as a couple...did we like them less...more...the same? Would it work all the time?

Anonymous said...

As a stand alone episode this would be fine, but for an episode being hyped up for the season finale? Awful, I get HH wanted this for the fans but an AU that was confusing, with a cop out ending?

lyssie said...

please help!
my dvr cut it off a minute late!
what happened right after booth woke up!

Poetic_line said...

I actually think he did a great job of giving us what we want and putting a twist on it.

So much love expressed. I couldn't have asked for much more.

It was beautiful and seeing Booth and Brennan really in love expressing that and knowing that Brennan loves him and wrote this story for him was beyond loving and sweet.

Anonymous said...

Shocking ending. Bones realizes her feelings, finally, and Booth gets amnesia. It has to be temporary, but my god, I'm not going to be able to enjoy watching it until I know what happens in the next season.

Pauline said...

I feel cheated and lied to.

Anonymous said...

OMG I cannot believe that, how can they do that. Ok Hanson said that B&B sleeping together would change the dynamic of the two. But how does a dream change anything. How much longer till next season now?

Poetic_line said...

To Anonymous,

Sex with Sully was not erotic; it was invisible under the sheets. And Brennan didn't really care about him except as a fling.

The sex between Booth and Brennan was sweet lovemaking with two people who truly cared for each other and that's what made it really terrific.

I loved it.

Mary said...

It wasn't a hallucination or a dream. HH is right. This is better. A hallucionation or a dream is accidental. The point here is that she made a concious choice to write a story about her and booth together, married, with baby.

The fact that she deleted it shows that she understands what she wrote.

The point is intent. It is understanding and awareness.

They may not be there, but for once it looks like she is ready.

Shep said...

OK, slightly calmer now.

I figured from the spoilers and promos that the sex scene wouldn't be real, but I'm just annoyed about the cheat - that they misled us, saying it's not a hallucination or fantasy, so we think it's real, but of course, it's a dream. (I did like the love scene though ;P)

I think I'd have enjoyed it more without all the spoilers, but I am glad that they left us completely in the dark about the ending.

And oh that ending, talk about a cliffy! Brennan realises her feelings and just as she deletes her record of it, it's all gone for Booth too, ( I like the way HH did that) and now they have to start over again! And the sight of Booth with the bandages and all - broke my heart! If they get it right, it could be a very good Season 5!

The episode was well written and acted out, loved the humour and in an interview, David did mention the Gravedigger's return, but he did it in a way that came off as jokey - clever git!

I loved everyone's roles and references to the show, but I wish Hodgin's had made more of an appearance, course he did narrate, so maybe that's why. I loved his Irish accent!! My favourite was probably Nigel-Murray. Liked Sweets' bartender-psychologist comment!

People's comments before had me freaked, but I do actually love the finale!

Anonymous said...

I am actually kind of angry... I hated the episode, and hated the ending. And I've never even slightly disliked any Bones episode in the past. I am so surprised/sad/upset/disappointed. :(

Anonymous said...

Question? Was that Booth's dream or Brennan's writing?

Amanda said...

FWIW, guys, the proper word to use here is:

Cliffhangered.

(with my kind apologies to J.C. Hutchins for coining the phrase).

Now that I've had a minute or two to digest things, I will say that I'm really glad that summer is my busy time, so it goes kind of fast.

Shep said...

I think people will be able to appreciate the episode more after a second viewing. The first one is just like 'Wait! WTF!!!!!'

Whther they love or hate this episode, I reckon people will tune in to S5, just to see how everything turns out!

Charlee Ann said...

Well I loved it.
One thing in particular that I loved? The way Booth looks at Brennan. Loved seeing that still there.
The beginning? Loved it. The ending? Loved what Brennan was writing, and the ending ending? GASP and "NNnnnNNnnnOoOOoOoooooo!!!" Is it time for season 5 yet? Please?

Shep said...

I think that the episode was Booth's dream, and all the narration was Brennan's writing.

MnM said...

I watched this episode at 4 am last night... (Yes I set my alarm clock for that time)

I felt a void in me all day long today... It was as if I had misplaced something.

I don't know if it was because I was disappointed, felt cheated or was sad knowing I have to wait at least 3 months to see what happens next.

"The bigger the build-up, the bigger the let-down"

*SIGH*

I am gonna go rewatch season 1 right now.

Anonymous said...

hmmmm... not that I'm obsessed or anything.... but I was just reading another blog..and they raised an interesting question.
When Booth asks who are you.... if it's his dream maybe he is asking her in the sense whether she is Bren or Bones?

Shep said...

Although this was hyped as a fun episode, with the sex scene etc... there wasn't much goofing, which I liked!

Anonymous said...

I have never even disliked a Bones ep before, and I HATED this.
This was supposed to be for the fans?? It was completely boring, everything I like about the show was nonexistent in this episode, and the ending was awful!
This episode reminds me of the finale of Alias season 2, right before everything started sucking. I am nervous about the future of my favorite show.

gilliAHHn said...

i haven't even seen it yet, still have like 1 1/2 hours to go, and im nervous. idk if i'll like it or not :/ but most people did. i got rele sad tho when i read that booth couldn't remeber bones D: hopefully, season 5 will return with a bang..*wink,wink*

lyssie said...

hey, you guys who watched it at 3 in the morning, what site for future reference?

Anonymous said...

This nonsense might have been okay for during the season, but not for a finale. I could not be more disappointed.

Anonymous said...

There is nothing wrong with the episode...but as the season finale? The whole season they have been boasting about how B & B are finally going to get together and this is what they give us?

I personally feel that after building up to this, we deserved something that was a little more real. While it may open their eyes and help in the future, it was awful for a finale.

Shep said...

MnM,I really liked the episode, but I'm feeling a void too! I'm not sure why. Maybe I'm reflecting Booth's memory loss or something!

And I have a chocolate craving.

colby said...

I think it was all her book - she was writing a book about a crime novelist who is telling the story. That's why Hodgins was narrating. The narrations are the author's commentary on what's going on and what's happening is the the actual story. I don't think any of it was Booth's dream.

I still haven't made up my mind on the episode...going to wait until I can watch it again and think a little more. I'm sure I'll watch it a million times over the summer regardless in order to tide over to season 5. But on second thought, I think the better thing to do might be to just try to forget about it until the fall to avoid the anxiety...hmmm...

MnM said...

oh but I did love the little speech at the end:

Amanda said...

Shep, we must be kindred spirits. Last weekend I was feeling homesick (I live kinda far from my family and haven't been home in about a year). My Dad and youngest brother paid me a surprise visit on Monday. My thoughts were "Where the heck were you guys yesterday when I was lonely and self-medicating with dark chocolate?"

Shep said...

I think what really pulled this episode down was not the episode itself, but the hype. We expected big smoochies and the mattress mambo and we got big smoochies and the mattress mambo, just...not really.

If they'd talked less about the hook up, it wouldn't be as dissapointing.

Anonymous said...

It's a love letter to fans because of all the in-jokes and references to past episodes, and because we got to see all the characters let their hair down and just have fun. That's what a good AU episode does, and that's why this episode was such a blast.

As a season finale, it woreked because of the ending, of course- I too liked the deletion of both Brennan's and Booth's feelings. I do think that (hopefully) it's not much of a cliffhanger- Booth has to regain his memory pretty soon in order for the series to continue.

However, it does leave us in an interesting place as far as the Booth-Brennan relationship goes. Will Brennan feel abandoned by Booth, even though he obviously has no control over the situation? Will Booth remember the depth of his feelings for Brennan? I don't know, but I can't wait to find out!

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I agree with others who say it's not a good epi for a finale. It's more of a stand alone episode after a real finale (an arty, take risks but don't piss off all of your fans epi). Never mind the damn cliff hanger. I hate cliff hangers when you can't pop in the next DVD. Grrr!!!!

Shep said...

Amanda - I love dark chocolate!!
I pretty much live off it!

lyssie said...

hey, you guys who watched it at 3 in the morning, what site for future reference?

Anonymous said...

oh how horrible would it be if Booth completely forgot the depth of his feelings for Brennan?! I would be floored because that love, respect and "deep emotional connection" (I'll use Sweets' words) he feels for Brennan is exemplary/one of a kind.

It can't be replaced =(

Anonymous said...

I really liked what some one else said about Booth asking if she was Bren or Bones, because of his dream he should at least think she was Bren. Also no one has addressed if it was Bren writing then why was Hodgins doing the narrating. It just doesn't make sense.

Phoenix said...

I really don't understand why so many people didn't like this episode! The episode itself, while clearly a hallucination, was very fun and interesting and it really isn't too clear whether that was Booth or Brennan's fantasy, which I thought was a nice play off of the continued line when Sweets said "I just figured it out."

Of course, I'm a little shocked, but now that I'm thinking about it, I think that this is going to breathe some new life into their relationship -- you can't live off of UST alone, and if they'd just gotten together "BONES" (as amazing as it is) could very easily go the way of "Moonlighting" and just drop in quality after the big get together.

Me, I can't wait until the season premiere this fall -- I'm willing to bet that no matter how new and unusual this new storyline is going to be, HH, Boreanaz, and Deschanel will pull it off with life, love, class, and humor. Now, let's just hope that they don't kill this new storyline off with a completely cliched thing like in this year's "Ghost Whisperer." Ugh!

Anonymous said...

Wow so much to say! First, I loved this episode and I thought it was very smartly written. That being said, I'm not sure if it was Booths dream or Brennan writing, but I like the idea someone had that it was a little of both. I also think that Hart Hanson did a great job at giving us a real cliff hanger in quite a few ways. We will all tune in next season to see this new dynamic that has been set up with Brennan being aware of her feelings and Booth not being always there. HH said it wouldn't be a hallucination but would change the dynamic between the two and no matter who imagined it it happened in their head and that would definitely change the dynamic.
Sorry for rambling I'm having a hard time keeping to one thought. In one of the early postings someone commented on the fact that HH must follow what the fans say, and what if this episode was his way of seeing if the fans really would like to see them together? Think about the fact that we got almost a whole episode of them married! Was the chemistry still there? I think so. Maybe he was testing the waters before he jumped in. Okay I think that's enough except that I love Mr. Nigel Murray! I also really enjoy reading everyones comments, and the great ideas that bounce around.

Anonymous said...

I am so #$#%@E$%^$# after watching the finale!
It was a GREAT episode but I couldn't enjoy it because I was expecting what I thought I had been promised! It was like taking a big drink of something and finding out it was water instead of coke....it quenched my thirst but my brain totally rejected it!!!!!
Ticked off at HH in Tennessee

Amanda said...

Well, outside of the CHEAT (which I think HH did say was going to be a cheat, so I can only throw little rocks, not HUGE ones), we did get some things:

1) Follow-up to Booth's surgery, which we DIDN'T get after Wannabe.

2) A HUGE thread to follow through next season.*

3) Brennan doing some critical thinking about their relationship, which was most definitely needed at this stage in the game.

*I think the missing background storyline is what we've been missing from S3 & S4. In S1 we had the search for Brennan's parents. In S2 we had finding Max. In S3 we had Gormogon. In S4 we didn't have much other than Booth's hallucinations, which you wouldn't necessarily pick out as "something's wrong" until Critic. With this new twist S5 should allow us to see more into Booth's past--a MacGuffin. Maybe it's not the plot device we'd like to see, but it does allow us to meet Booth's family and see his backstory--something we have for Brennan, but very little for Booth.

Phoenix said...

Oh, and BTW, the fact that Sweets' band was that good, sexy Wendell was a scowling bouncer, Zach was back (even if briefly), Fisher actually WASN'T annoying, Clark was a rapper, and Motley Crue performed all in one episode may just make this my most zanily favorite "BONES" episode yet, if purely for the random amazingness.

Shep said...

Also, Booth wearing Brenna's robe - hee!

Shep said...

Can't wait to find out about Booth's past - sure to be a few intense episodes next Season.

Amanda said...

BTW, guys, checking the Dr. Brennan Twitter feed: Cullen was mentioned (he and Charlie stopped to see Booth). So, my theory that he went to go work for Make-A-Wish was wrong. I wonder if this means we'll see him again (even if in a flashback scenario)???

Dani said...

did ANYONE at all pick up on the fact that Brennan at the end has finally realised she's in love with him or are people still too busy flat spinning about what i thought was a fantastic episode?!

im sorry if its been brought up already.. but as far as im concerned, this changes EVERYTHING for them next season!!

Amanda said...

Dani, I think Booth's question is the "End" in Brennan's "Beginning". If that's not obtuse enough... that's the best way I've been able to phrase it (I've been thinking for at least a half-hour)

Meg said...

I actually loved this episode. YES, I absolutely missed our B&B time, but I really liked how they made this one fun.

What I was really worried about this episode was how it was hyped they'd get together. I know I'm not alone when I say that I thought it was going too fast. If our favorite duo is going to get together, they need to do it in the right way, not:

"Oh, I want a baby. Let's have sex."
"But I want to be involved. So let's be a couple."

I think the significance of the episode was to show everything that happened in Booth's head. He WANTS to be with Brennan. He WANTS to be married. He WANTS her to have his kids. (Ok, we already knew all of that, but this is an explicit illustration.)

Hopefully, he'll wake up and realize what he wants. Now all Booth has to do is act on it!

And I'm HOPING HOPING HOPING that the "Who are you?" was like a "Are you my wife, or are you my partner?"

Please do not give Seeley Booth, the man upon whom I base my standards for a future husband, amnesia.

Shep said...

In the questions submitted for Variety's interview with HH and SN, I love this one:

"BOOTH'S BRAIN BOO-BOO BENIGN, BUT BEAUTIFUL BOOTH-BRENNAN BOND BACKSLIDING BECAUSE BOOTH'S BRAIN'S BLANK? BRENNAN'S BABY?? BONES BREAKUP??? BONES BETTER BE BACK BECAUSE "BONE-AHOLICS" BEWITCHED, BOTHERED....BUT BEWILDERED!!! BIT-A-BUZZ BOYS????"

Anonymous said...

For those of you who are confused about if this was Brennan's writing/ Booth's dream... i think it was both. What Hodgens was narrating was Brennan's wrting, and what we were seeing was Booth's dream.

I also loved this episode. I thought it was fun, and it made me excited for next season. I'm glad Brennan finally understands her feelings for Booth,

mo said...

im pretty disappionted....not as great as i wanted.
they pulled an NCIS. in the 3rd season of NCIS, Gibbs was in an explosion, and lost his memory....wonder how Booth will recover.

juniors said...

My issue:

THIS was the finale??? Umm...shoulda been a midseason episode. Weird.

Poetic_line said...

I really believe it was all Brennan's writing and Booth incorporated what she read to him into a dream.

Does that make sense.

Dreams are not so connected or make that much sense as a story. Dreams start and stop and change direction. This was definitely going in one direction with plenty of twists.

It was a guided dream in which Brennan expressed her love for Booth.

I feel cheated. Hart Hanson, I hate you.

Worst. Episode. Ever.
Sorry folks. I give you props for attempting to analyze this episode to find something positive in it, but I think it was total garbage from beginning to end. I was actually bored through most of it! That was probably because everything in the episdode was cliched and cheesy. Amnesia? Seriously?!? I am so disappointed I could cry.

Ang said...

Trying to figure out the title to this episode has been killing me, so I started watching it for a second time. Listen to Hodgins first lines;People say you only live once but people are as wrong about that as they are about everything. In the darkest moments before dawn a woman returns to her bed. What life is she leading? Is it the same life she was living a half hour ago? A day ago? A year ago? Who is this man? Do they lead separate lives or a single life shared?
In hindsight that sums up the end perfectly. Kudos to HH, and can we really be mad about what he implied in interviews, shouldn't we be upset about what we inferred?

Anonymous said...

Yeah I liked Brennan realizing Booth would be worth it to risk a relationship. But the amnesia thing was so soap opera.

ninirific said...

I am just really confused you guys. I don't know what to think or how to feel. I don't know what was what. I need to re-watch it.

Amanda, your "someone just said "Booth's question is the "End" in Brennan's "Beginning".

WOW. GASP.

millie said...

wowzies. that was pretty intense.

i agree with one of the "anonymous-ers"--i think the voiceovers were brennan, the visuals were booth. but here's my question: if the storyline was booth's dream, then how could he not know brennan? he even said when he woke up, "that seemed so real!"...so he remembered the dream...therefore he must remember her. Soooo...by my logic (which may be screwed up, so let me know) when he asks "who are you" he means "you were my wife in my dream...who are you? why were you in my dream?"

does that make sense? i dont know...let me know what you guys think...

ps--my thought of the episode was that i liked the first and last 5 minutes as well as the little inside joke tidbits...but not the actual plot.

My Goodness...reading all of the negative comments about this episode is making my head hurt! I usually LOVE coming here after an episode, but am very disappointed at all of the negativity here!

I loved the episode. LOVED seeing B&B together. Who cares if it was AU? Did anyone really think they were going to just put them together, just like that?? This is tv, people. You need drama and ust and all kinds of sexual tension, and you need it to continue. I want to see a REAL love story play out between these two. Brennan is finally coming around, and realizing that she does indeed, have feelings for Booth. If you put them together 'just like that'...well, it takes away from it.

I totally didn't see the cliff-hanger coming, at all! Very shocking. But once again...it's a summer cliff-hanger. This is what makes people tune back in, when the show comes back in the fall. That's what season finales are all about!

Once again...loved seeing B&B together. Just loved it. They were still hot as hell, even being married :)

I'm still in shock! I just can't believe it.. Booth has amnesia?! And Brennan kinda realizes she's in love with him!! Too much exciment for one episode ... I think I'm a little glad B&B are still not together 'cause that means we'll have more Bones' seasons coming up.. I can't wait for season five!!! I mean, what the heck I'm I gonna do 'till September :(

Ok -- I blogged some of this last night. I've now had 24 hrs. to calm down. But unfortunately it hadn't changed my opinion.

Bottom line -- alternative universe is fine to a point. And *maybe* fine for a regular episode. Not a finale.

And when 99% of the episode is AU, you're just robbed of a true view of the characters we love so much.

Regardless of the end -- which was embarrassing and reminded me of soap operas I used to watch when I was young (amnesia? seriously?)-- I don't think I could be more disappointed. Not necessarily because of what happened -- because in reality next to nothing happened since it was all fantasy.

Yes, there were things to derive from the narration -- but to be robbed of the characters for the entire episode -- especially following such an emotional end to the previous episoide -- is just criminal.

I guess I'm befuddled by people who said how great it was to see them as a couple...yeah, great, but it wasn't real!!! How can I enjoy them as a couple when it's not real? So the story and characters aren't advanced at all.

I feel really bad saying that but there it is...I'm so bummed. I know it sounds like I'm angry, and maybe I am. But really I am just so very disappointed.

I guess we could also be upset about how many times they told us the "hook up" was going to be real and not imagined -- when it was exactly that -- imagined. But that didn't even bother me near as much as the fact that basically it was a non-episode from a character standpoint. To have this one be the last one of the season -- wow.

I'm trying to look at the other side of the argument and I'm just not seeing it. I wish I could.

I had a feeling I wasn't going to love it -- but I thought my frustration would be another obstacle put between them. Instead I was frustrated because for 42 out of 43 minutes we did not get to see or experience the true Booth and Brennan. And that makes me very sad...especially for the last episode of the season.

Ok, I'll stop. Sorry to ramble on....!!!! :-)

As fans, we might feel entitled to dictate how this goes. But in the end, it is the creator's vision of the show and its characters - that, in the first place, is what got us hooked. Like he said, we can totally blame him for it, but he is just showing us an alternate reality, and it is *his* baby.

I'm honestly in an "OMG OMG OMG" mode since I saw the episode! Now that I have been able to sleep on it a bit, I get all of the references! It's fantastic how they have worked them in, and I loved how all of them were different!

I think we have to realize that when the DVD of season 4 comes out, this episode (among others) will possibly one of the 'extended' ones. More scenes with the characters we love (more Zack, Hodgins, Max etc), more character re-assignment, more dialogue and definitely a Motley Crue/Bones music video. For those of us fans who are griping about it not being up to the hype, think it might make up for it only then.
It just sucks that we will have to wait until the Season 4 DVD set comes out, though.

And, seriously, HH - if you ever want to come to India to do some Seeley/Jared Booth re-bonding (after the amnesia and what-not), I'd love to help as an extra, at least!! :D

Now, back to imagining how Season 5 will open!

I have so much to say, don't know where to begin. I did love the episode, but I do admit it was not what I was expecting. That aside, it was a very clever, emotional episode. I believe that Bones does now realize how she feels about Booth. She loves him and it scares her for many reasons, but for now this brain tumor business and then him being in a coma for 4 days really freaked her out. I think that as she was writing she was also reading it out loud as she went along. I think Booth could hear her and he dreamed his dream which is what we saw thru the whole episode. This also shows how he feels about Bones and what he wants with her. I think Bones deleted the story because it scared her and he hadn't woke up yet. I do believe that Booth does NOT have amnesia. He even said that it was a dream but that it seemed so real. And the way he looked at her. NO AMNESIA there. I think he asked her who are you because possibly he was confused and a little disoriented after being in a coma for 4 days and plus the fact that the dream did seem so real to him and it made him very happy. I mean, come on, we all know that he loves her so much, he would do anything to protect her, he wants to be with her, marry her, and have children with her. But at this point of coming out of a 4 day coma maybe he was wondering if she was Bren or Bones. When he said it seemed so real, she said it wasn't real. I am not sure what she was thinking here, did she just think he was confused or did she think that he heard her as she was writing her story? I am not sure about this, but if she did think that he did hear, I bet that it scared her. I also think that she knows exactly what he is asking her. She is VERY smart after all.

All in all, I did really, really like this episode, I cried happy tears at the begining and scared tears at the end. I am really curious to see where they do go with this in season 5. There are so many ways to go. And to me, during the AU reality that was both Bones's and Booth's, I thought they made a great couple and the chemistry was still there strong as ever. Season 5 is going to be great. I can't wait. Booth and Bones are so great together in and out of bed. I just love them. The love scene was so sweet and romantic, WOW!

OK GUYS....

I understand exactly why they did the episode like this -- and I feel angry for such a copout. I don't like it one bit. For fan-fiction? Sure. For the season Finale of my favorite show? Abso-freaking-lutely NOT.

First, the episode was a cheat-like way of giving us insight into the characters. I don't want to be told through some dream or narrative story.. I want them to express their feelings themselves, in their own lives.

Second, the ending leaves Hart with so many options of where to take next season -- (1) does Brennan revert to S1 Brennan?, (2) does Brennan try to get Booth to remember he loves her?, (3) did Booth just mean "who are you" as in, are you "Bones" or "Bren"?, (4) do Booth and Bones "break up" (both relationship- and work-wise) because Booth is no longer able to work for the FBI due to his amnesia? etcetera etcetera etcetera....

I feel like, sure, it took brilliant story-writing on Hart's part to be so creative, and to so clearly express each and every characters feelings. And, yes, it was a brilliant way to lead us into next season because it leaves us completely unaware of where he's going to take it. But, ultimately, I feel angry and absolutely CHEATED because it does not further the characters in any way, only found a cheesy loop-hole through which to make us privy to their feelings.

So while I admire Hart for his braveness, I am extraordinarily upset and disappointed. And, for the first time in 4 years, am NOT looking forward to where this show is going. :(

In response to someone who said that Jared killing for her probably means they'll be together next season, I disagree. I think the storyline was Booth's dream (and the voiceovers were her book). So Booth is probably on some level still nervous about Jared being attracted to Brennan.

Anonymous said...

I don't know about the amnesia, whether it's really amnesia, but that plot point makes sense...we heard the actor who plays Parker will be in a lot more next season, and Booth's grandfather, so they call come back to tell him about his past...

However, with the other thing (he's asking if she's his wife or just his partner), he wasn't smiling AT ALL when he woke up. Whether she was his partner or his wife, he would smile (like in CitC)...so I'm not so sure about that.

millie said...

if he remembered his dream though, how could he not recognize her?

not saying you're wrong, just confused...

Anonymous said...

Logically, I can understand the episode. And, to some extent, appreciate it.

BUT we can't help our initial gut reactions, and my gut reaction was: I. Hated. It.

I found it almost unbearable to sit through... the characters in this episode were NOT the characters I fell in love with. I didn't empathize with them (no matter how much I tried to rationalize that they were, in fact, the characters' consciousnesses as internalized by Booth/Bones), and I really could've cared less about the case/goings-on.

Not to mention, I was confused for most of the episode, and just found myself saying (to pardon my language): WHAT THE EFF.

So logic aside, my gut reaction is that I am disappointed and overall dissatisfied.

although it wasn't what i wanted, the episode was well written, and truly kept me on the edge of my seat, until the final minute, when i wanted to SCREAM AT HH, shame on him.

I have to side with those who hated this episode. I could deal with the AU and even the sex cheat, but having Booth wake up with amnesia is just ridiculously soap opera-esque. It's also clearly an attempt to set back the clock on the development of their relationship because of the fear of the Moonlighting scenario, even though I firmly believe that ED and DB could pull off coupledom while still keeping things interesting. I feel like my favorite show was taken away from me in that final minute, and if they reintroduce some ridiculous love triangles next season with Jared and/or Perotta I'm done. And as much as I'd love to focus on the positive of Brennan realizing her feelings for Booth in the end of this epi, I think the fact that she DELETES what she just wrote about love is more significant than her realization.

Agree Jilly, Saddest Bones Fan & Anonymous at 11.23 pm.

Feel very let down by this episode. There was so much hype, anticipation and excitment. Maybe I expected too much. "Critic in the Cab" set up for a fantastic finale but I just didn't think it delivered.

Missed the characters I know and fell in love with. Missed having an actual "bones" case. What is with all the hallucination story lines at the moment (Bones, Grey's Anatomy, House)?

The final few minutes and Brennan's realisation of how she feels about Booth was probably the only saving grace.

IMO "Con Man in Meth Lab" and "Mayhem on Cross" best episodes of Season 4.

Wow, this is weird. Usually, I'm the one complaining about how the episode disappointed, but this time you are all very unhappy and I am very happy. Honestly, I'm not sure what the rest of you wanted. Maybe someone could explain what you wanted?

P.S. Yes, the whole amnesia thing is lame, but I doubt it will last long, it's too inconvenient to write around.

I don't think it was HH promised but i still loved it. It was such a huge cliffy at the end!!! i live in australia and we are actually only up to the bone that blew but i have seen all of season 4 online. i thought it was a great episode!!! can't wait for season 5!!! but i am still kinda confused: was brennan writing that or was booth dreaming it??? Or both????? I think it might have been both.....
Great episode!!

Anonymous said...

I guess my disappointment is my own fault. I do think on some level we were mislead but that is how they build interest. It is not all about the sex thing- as someone else wrote even in AU it was great. They were really beautiful together as a couple. Complete trust and true love not just the sex. I think this is a clear indication that we won't lose anything if they get together. At the end I thought that Brennan was writing and reading it out loud (Hodgins narration) to Booth and he heard her even in a coma. The ending is what disappointed me the most. They have taken great care to build a relationship between these two people. In the ending of the episode last week Brennan and Booth told each other they loved each other - without saying a word. It was so touching I have cried every time I have watched it. That shows real talent all around. This week her writing a story that included loving, marrying, and having a baby with Booth - further development. Then - bam - "Who are you" from Booth???? I am sorry but that was awful!!! Now what - we start all over??? Yes there was a twist and it went straight to my heart. Sorry just needed to vent a little.

so incredibly unbelievably disappointed. what a waste of 4 seasons. you know i started watching the show only a few months ago for the FORENSIC ANTHROPOLOGY content. not only did the season finale not have any of that but the ending makes everything that happened before it seem meaningless. i wish HH would stop messing with the drama and bring some of the focus back to anthropology.

I really liked the episode! I loved Sweets' band, (I'm not Gormagon...) and I LOVED Mr. Nigel-Murray! In fact, I think I liked all the interns' personalities better in the AU than in real life. And Motley Crue! The episode was a lot of fun.

Until the end.

Eli said...

I don't know what others 114 comments said but my take on the story is Brennan use Hodgins character to tell the story to Booth. And Brennan and the others casts are the characters in Hodgins/Brennan's story. She or HH should changed their AU character names to make it easier. As Brennan story-telling Booth in his unconcious about one man and his wife owned a Club named The Lab and bla-bla-bla until the end.

Just realize how handsome Arastoo is without his funny facial expression and the accent.

It is funny to see Fisher is hitting on Daisy and how Daisy has Angela's libido but she is hitting on Sweets.

And I still didn't like Vincent Murray same as when he is an intern.

IMHO I think this episode is suitable for season openning for Season 5 and the previous episode is as a finale. Like others majority people me too jump and almost explode watching for the first time and it tone down after the second view and the third view I can enjoyed the episode.

In scarsatic(sp?) way, we did know that they (the writers) always did the story without any continuity right so just accept as it is then you can enjoyed more.

First, to all you disappointed in the amnesia - have you watched other T.V. shows lately? If you thought that was soap opera-ish, turn on House, or Grey's Anatomy, or Private Practice, or... you get the picture. We've had hallucinations, amnesia, drug trips - because it's T.V., and they need cliffies. Booth having amnesia after brain surgery - which will surely not last long - is plausible compared to some other shows.

I loved the episode - no, not exactly what I expected, but seriously, we all knew at least part of it was a dream/alternate reality. And Booth's brain surgery is not exactly conducive to sex. But the references were great, Brennan realizing her feelings was sweet, and the cliffhanger just makes me wish it was September already!

I honestly don't think I can even watch Bones next season. After all the build up and hype to cop out like this is just pathetic. I feel very betrayed and hurt by HH and I think he will regret ending the season like this. I have to agree with earlier posters that this would have been fine mid-season, but as a season finale? No way! This was a very poor way to end the season and it is very disrespectful to loyal fans. I was upset from five mins in and I never felt better and to end with Booth not knowing Bones? COME ON?!?! This is such a blow off for fans- I think HH is insane for thinking true fans would enjoy this piece of shite ending.

Anonymous said...

Just chimming in to say I really thoroughly enjoyed the finale... I think the fun thing about Bones is that it can do these fun plots and twists and still make you want to scream and cry and toss a brick at the tv. And I've been watching since the Pilot, and in reality it really is just a show, there's gonna be good enders and bad enders... for all we know this will last all of 2 mins into the season opener.

Also I loved the ending... I think subconsciously it was Hodgin's narration to Brennan's feelings, and the story was almost her amalgamation of The Life (skewed of course)that she could lead if she were to open up verbally instead of in type. Also I didn't take the erasing of her feelings at the end to be symbolic of like a step back, more a huff of not being able to say it, and maybe a tad bit of hopelessness.

but then again i enjoyed it very very much, i thought the story was a semi love letter to the fans, and all the little easter eggs are so fun to find!

Did anyone ever think that Booth might have been speaking while in his coma and Bones was typing it out? It might explain why she deleted it.

The Finale itself was gud but it was huuuuuuge cheat on Hart's part.. I was like WTF abt amnesia and sex not being real if they had said that from beginning that it is not real it wud have been ok but the it was hyped up that sheesh I was really pissed...other than that I found the narration was nice and "Bren" declaring her love was very sweet and creative.

A Bones fan ask HH on twitter:

"Can you confirm that Jack's commentary = Bren's Book..and the non commentary = booth's dream"

Answer from Hart Hanson

"I absolutely CANNOT confirm. It wasn't a dream, it wasn't a book, it was something else. The meeting of two minds?"

Anonymous said...

ooooooohhhhh mmyyyy ggoooooddd wwooooorrsssttt cliffhanger ever!

if it is not temporary I will DIE.

this had better be resolved quickly.

and the sex was a cheat. we were all so excited about seeing the real characters get together in real life. and they did not. though i do like her acknowledging her feelings i am... very... upset.

way to get everyone to tune in next season though, i guess

i think i would have been more behind the fun of all the characters playing different roles if i werent waiting the whole time for the reality which i was WAY more interested in. also the case was lame without the cool science, you know? however i cant wait to watch it again knowing the narration is hers.

erin said...

i didn't hate it - but i certainly didn't love it, either - like has been mentioned previously, these weren't the characters i love. i felt very detached at times - it was like i was watching a pilot for a different show with the same actors and character names. just very strange.

it kind of reminded me of the friends episode where it was the 'might have been' - where monica was still big and chandler was joey's assistant - and that's my favorite episode of friends - so maybe this will grow on me? i don't know. i missed the science; i missed brennan being so brilliant, yet so obtuse; i missed booth being all heart. again, it wasn't bad - it was just weird.

OK SO HERE WE GO:

as someone who was ramped up to believe the characters are destined to realise their feelings for each other and ACTUALLY get together... this is the only thought that keeps me going:

Brennan now has time to "catch up" to Booth, and she will be the jealous one, etc, everything we have been missing so far.. his end as her beginning, sure...

but then, one day, it will all come flooding back to him.

and it will be glorious.
and they will be in love.

this is the only way i can deal, because otherwise, the connection that they have forged, the depth of his feelings, the MAIN REASON WE WATCH THE SHOW (lets not lie!) will be GONE and all we will be doing is waiting impatiently and angrily to have it back.

deal with it Hart. you have to get them together. and now youve made it even more urgent that it happen SOON.

Gilly said...

can i go into a 4 day coma too? and when i wake up this either didn't happen or it turned out i was in a 3 month coma? and season 5 is starting? and booth meant 'are you my wife'? Anonymous said...

wow I agree with so many of you.... and I never thought I'd say this, but I was disappointed with the episode.

I wasn't disappointed because of the quality of the writing (it was excellent), or the talent of the actors (amazing)... I was disappointed because those weren't the characters that I fell in love with.

it was like watching an entirely different show, that just so happened to star emily deschanel & david boreanaz & all the other same actors. their mannerisms, their personalities; their weird & quircky idiosyncrasies; their twisted & tangled & complex & odd & special relationships that have developed over the course of four seasons..... poof! all gone.

I didn't have any interest in watching what was going on during most of the episode (try as I did to pay attention) because I didn't care about them: the faces may have been the same, but they most definitely were not the characters I've grown to love.

the ending was like a stab in the back. it gives hart & the writers the ability to take back anything & everything that ever happened. (whether or not they actually plan on doing so is almost irrelevant. in the end, it was a cheap way to leave that door open and avoid the 'moonlighting' scenario.)

I was prepared for this whole AU and that the BB lovemaking was some kind of cheat. So I wasn't that disappointed. In fact I could really enjoy the episode for what it was: a lot of fun and full of clever innuendos.
And the fact (at least I saw it that way) that it was Brennans writing and imagination was HUGE. I mean wow, it seems that she has really caught up to her own reality.
Yet the ending with Booths amnesia had me a little disappointed. I think it's too much of a cliché to be bones-worthy. But I hope that they won't go over the top with this storyline in season 5.

Sooo... I watched this episode twice (actually the beginning, the ending and some scenes way more than twice ;-) ), I think everyone should do that. The main problem was that as always my expectations were too high.
To me it didn't matter that the sex scene (which was actually a very very sweet love scene) was a fake, but what disappointed me was that they said the those two were going to get together! That's why. I felt cheated and so I was really angry about the ending. But then I realized that it was actually a very good episode, with a lot of funny and sweet scenes, so in the second viewing I appreciated it much more!
We actually got to see BB in a way that I don't think we'll see soon again. I loved seeing them together like that. My absolute favorite character in the episode was Brennan (I spent hours trying to figure out why the hell did Booth call her Bren and not Bones, but then I got an illumination out of nowhere... in the AU she's not a forensic anthropologist so, as she said back in season two, no bones, no Bones! hahah)
Anyway it was wonderful to see her sweet and passionate and sure without any doubts about the relationship, and the last scene of the AU was awesome! it was a very very sweet moment, in contrast with the following that was oh so sad! But even in the sadness I loved her writing those wonderful words and finally realizing her feelings. a little too late, sadly! But I loved her teary eyes and expressions!
In the AU there were some great moments too! We got to see all the characters, including my beloved Caroline and Nigel-Murray and Zach! The Zach looked like the one from season 1 and early 2! A cute funny kid with no serious doctorate and an Iraq past!
Sweets saying that he was a bartender and so kind of a psychologist was hilarious, and so was Angela saying that she had no visual immagination to recognise the victim!! Nigel-Murray wantong to shot Zach and his shocked expression, Booth still disliking Zach and Brennan still annoyed by Daisy, Zach learning things from Hodgins' books, Booth opening the door with that flashy pink clothes on... these are just some of the funny things in the episode, but there were much mure!
And I really liked Hodgins' voice over the scenes, mostly because I love the words he was saying!
The ending...oh my that was devastating! I just wanted to go and give Brennan a hug!! They found out a great thread to start season 5 and I really can't wait!!!
Ok... so I was angry and disappointed because of the BB cheat but the more I think about the whole episode the more I like it. They couldn't have made a huger cliffhanger anyway!!
So mu advice to everyone... watch the episode a second time, just forget the cheat for a minute and enjoy it as it is! Because I realized it IS a great episode.

I laughed so much but I cried and was taken aback so much more ... totally worth any of the annoyance I may be feeling ... it was completely amazing and a perfect finale - cliff hanger and all xxx

Hi there, I for one hated this episode on the first watch and commented that if that was a love letter to the fans bones as dumped I have since watched it a second time and really thought hard about the episode. I can tell you that I am alot less angry and disappointed than I was then and taken on its own the episode was OK. once reading some of the points on this site I am remembering the episode in a whole different light.
As for booth's amnesia this has to come to an end immediately in season 5 or else the whole crime fighting team can't continue and then there wold be no point to bones as a show. Brennan and the writing of the book shows the realisation of the depth of her feelings for booth. the question being did booth's "who are you" at the end freak her enough to think on this as abandonment and run. or will her depth of feeling pull her toward being there no matter what I think the first. they could not remove his feelings for her its a huge part of the show it would be like a removal of another main character, this is something I dont think bones could survive we need the deep glances and his smiles they are legandary.

So forgive me if someone else has already said it... over 100 comments are hard to read through in one sitting.

I totally flipped out over all of this. The show itself was... OK... would have liked it better as the episode before the season finale or Part one of a 2 hour episode. I seriously was speechless (other then a few choice words) at the end.

SInce the twitter accounts have started it made me wonder what the heck they were going to do with it. And now I think I know. They are going to use if for viral marketing. Things are going to happen over the summer and it will happen through twitter. If you don't have an account I would recommend getting one if only for following this.

Overall I believe the amnesia will be short lived and solved quickly. For there not to be repercussions to his bad reaction to the anesthesia should have been known. He is confused, disoriented, and had a confusing dream. Just after I got done with my surgery and woke up from the anesthesia it took me a good 10 minutes to figure out where I was and what happened. I really think it was just meant to be a shocker and scare us.

but, once booth remembers everything won't he remember his feelings for brennan? and now that she has realized her feelings for him wont that mean they're getting together? And werent the writers talking about how they have done the final episode in a way that doesn't get rid of the tension between the two?

my fear is that Booth will suffer from amnesia for some time, or at least the side effects, or something.

Hey guys! I just finished watching the episode and was quite disappointed not so much because it was a bad episode but because it was a bad finale following a season that only improved in its second half. I think that this overall disappointment should be a lesson for the producers including Hart Hanson who increased a lot the expectations of the fans by promoting the events of the episode so much.
Another thing that annoyed me was the fact that after havong them kiss in a forced way, now they had them having sex in a dream (or whatever that is) ,thereby "waisting" their first times by making them much less significant than they could have been...
Also, this episode was not interesting at all cause we did not see our regular characters that we have come to love but a bunch of uknown people that I personally could not care less if they lived or died! In THE SCENE (as everyone calls it) all I saw was two people that I had never seen before having sex and I don't think that this is what we all expected!
The whole dream will NOT affect at all the development of the chatacetrs-I am pretty sure about this although the cliffhanger in the end was indeed something to expect from the next season! To tell you the truth I think it will be solved very quickly-even in the beginning of the 1st episode of the next season but anyway...
Overall, I have to say that the episode did not live up to my expectations for a Bones finale!

I stayed away from all spoilers and I liked the episode. Not my all time favorite, but I was happy with it. I loved that right after Booth and Bren discuss how they are happier being club owners than crime fighters they solve the case.

Sadly, I suspect that Booth's amnesia will make Bones unable to trust that "it's worth it."

The only thing that will keep me going is knowing that maybe, finally, Brennan has realized her feelings...and, no matter what comes in S5, that is a major breakthrough...Booth not knowing who she was, now that was a Pain in the Heart LOL. I agree with some posters that this shouldn't have been the finale...but like I said, I'm prone to changing my mind :) (doubt it tho)

I completely agree with everything Jilly said. Grrr. :( But is it going to stop me from tuning in to Season 5? Absolutely not!

We are a group of fans from Spain and we coment on bones as we work together. We were deeply disappointed.Well, we were yesterday and we are also now.

We have seen two persons very similar to B&B in another different show and so the rest of the casting Where is the point? I did not reconignice any of them. The bedromm scene it look totally away because it was about two different characters.

And the last minute when they came back to reality , the only minute we have of Bones is to have the big, out of place sentence Who are you?
Well I have another: To Who did you write this bad joke-episode? Because we have been following this show 4 years and we do not deserve to be treated like this.

Very unfair episode

I think that what Poetic_line said was preatty much it.

I seriously don't know what to say...I'm shocked.

The epi was really cute, I liked watching it. B&B together are soooo cute! Exactly as I imagined. The ending made me cry. Amnesia?!?! NOOOOOO! I do hope, like the reswt of you, that this will lead to an interesting S5 plot.

Now I can't wait!

Poor Booth...and poor Brennan! She just realized what her feelings for him were and he can't remember a thing!

*counting the days until S5*

I really liked seeing everyone playing different roles, ironically I think Booth was very close to his same character but Brennen was very different I wonder what that says about who's point of view the dream, or whatever was coming from. Hart did good at making everyone believable in their fake roles I think

Not sure what hurts more today. Hope for Brennan and Booth or fear for George and Izzy (Grey's Rocked last night too!) I feel totally Cliffhung! I am a school teacher who is actually wishing summer away so that my mind can be put at ease. Who knew I could be so emotionally attached to works of fiction!

Anonymous said...

i think we are wasting our time if we try to figure out what it all 'meant' - how much was from Brennan's vs Booth's mind. Hart purposely made it ambiguous and there probably isn't a 'right answer'. he likes to watch us spin our wheels.
I'll just wait until the fall.
The one nice bright spot of the episode is that Brennan realized her feelings for Booth. I think that part was very clear and lovely.
Do you all agree that she knows she loves him now?

Mayflower said...

I've just rewatched the epi, and I've noticed Hodgins says: "people say you only live once, but they're wrong" and also "is it the same life the woman was living a year ago". I think, this is kind of a flashforward, maybe even to the series finale i don't know. I think so because only in the first scene (the bed scene)Bones and Booth have their tipical playful banter and bickering going on, and it's only in this scene that they realy act like the "real booth and brennan". I realy think Booth is going to have amnesia(WHAT I ABSOLUTELY HATE!), but at some level, I think he will remember bones. I think she will be acting the same way like she did when booth was "dead" because she finally opened her heart, and now the man who she's in love with abandons her (although he can't help it). I think that private Parker will help him realize (in a very grey's anatomy way)who Bones is, and that he eventually (probably season 5 final, typical HH)will realize that he wants to commit to her. I also think that Bones will have a strong relationship with booth's grandfather, the way she'll know everything about booth's history and realize that he too, is afraid to be abandoned. I also think that Jared will have a pretty significant role. Maybe he will try to comfort Bones (not that i want this to happen :-( ), but he will realize that she only has loved one man, the real Booth ofcourse :-) I want them to have eventually a baby, even to marry, and I think that Brennan realizes she wants that too, maybe because of what Angela said in the CITC "maybe this is your only chance to have a real family", and their wedding in the alternate reality is how she want's it to be. I know it's a very long explanation and I can be very wrong. but i think it'll be something like that

Mayflower said...

actually, I wanna change my statement :D I don't think that booth will be suffering from amnesia, and that he DO recognizes bones, because he says "So are you" (awake) and "It felt so real". Bones says "but it wasn't real", so maybe Booth is confused that it wasn't real, because their love and connection has always been obvious to him.

Anonymous said...

Yessssss! Maybe Booth says "who are you" because he is unsure at the time if Bones is his wife or just his partner. Reality and dreams becomes confusing when you first wake up from a dream. You don't know whats real or not. HH may be on to something here.

Totally cute moment when she sat on his lap :)

Rolywa said...

GUYS SOMEONE ON TWITTER FIGURED IT OUT!!

The sex scene was REAL. It was "the end" as in the episode was played in reverse order. The sex was a future thing and Booth waking up was really before that......think about it!!!

Anonymous said...

I think like the episode name it is end in the beginnig. The beginning refers to Booth-Brennan love and the end is end it didnt even start but they were going there and now it ended.THe end in the beginnig. And all the spoilers HH gave us was just for money i guess i mean think about it Bones get really good advertising with the idea of Booth-Brennan in bed together. All the magazine covers and talk show.I really dont like it...

I loved when they were kicking each other ... "you get it, no you get it". So B and B plus.

The not-so-bright employees was a great twist on the brilliant squints.

This will certainly turn the tables. Brennan will now be the one who struggles daily ... I'm interested to see how she handles her newfound feelings (I love this guy and want to be with him!) with a Booth who has no recollection of her.

And I liked someone else's idea about Season 5 digging into Booth's past more.

Mayflower said...

the more I think about it, the more I'm sure we're dealing with a time lapse. And in that case, HH didn't lie to us. First of all, he stated that "in the finale B and B are going to be in bed together, and it will NOT be a dream, halucination, alternate reality". The only explanation is that the scene in the beginning will happen in the future, probably the end of season 5, because Hodgins says, is she leading the same life like she did A YEAR AGO. Also, all the cast members have enfatized that HH will get B and B together in a very unexpected way and that there'll be many twists and turns. I think that the whole lab scene is indeed Booth's dream, which makes him realize he's madly in love with Bones and he want's to have a baby with her. I also think that Bones is writing a new KANDY (:D) novel and she realizes that Booth is worth the risk for opening herself up.

Anonymous said...

Instead of Booth waking up and saying "Who are you?" to Brennan, I think this is what should have happened:

Booth wakes up and is dazed, but when he is able to focus on Brennan he recognizes her and smiles at her.
He asks what is happening, and she tells him how the surgery was successful, but he was in a coma for four days, then...

Brennan takes his hand in his, looks him in the eye, and says, "There's something I need to tell you."

Fade to black.

cordy said...

The more I think about it, the more I like the possibility that the sex between BB could indeed be real, maybe some sort of timelapse.
For once the voice over by Hodgins is an indicator, specially the line "is she leading the same life she did a year ago". And then just look at the time on the alarm clock, when she comes home and crawls into bed it's 4:47 and then when there is the knock at the door the clock shows 5:43.
That's just one hour, presumably little time for mind-blowing sex and falling deeply asleep. Just my imagination ;-)

Angela said...

Oh gosh I like the theory of those guys in twitter!! :-)) I too noticed the light after the scene but I didn't think about it! Ohhhh now I wanna know!!! ;-)

I Loved the epidode... until the end. I can't believe HH is still going to tease us. HE said that it would be a real hook up, not just booths dream, or a story someone was telling. Very disapointing.

Hope he fixes that soon:)

Overall: Great concept, poorly executed.

I thought the dream portion of the episode was extremely draggy and just way too cheesy, even for an alt reality.

It was poorly directed. Maybe that's suppose to be some nod to Booth not being able to creatively put things together, but it was generally very sloppy.

Even the sex scene. It wasn't even a sex scene. It was kissing and rolling over once. A total cop-out, but hey it's Fox, so can't expect much less.

Now I will say this: I love the idea of this episode.
Brennan's words with Booth's dream. The pay-off is when we realize this - and how Brennan is actually the one struggling with their partnership, channeling it through writing because she can't quite get it out in words. And even then, she has to delete it.

It shows something remarkable - how two people can feel the same way but deal very differently. I personally thought this revelation was very well-done, and I'm glad they're making Booth's medical situation longer instead of the ol' "magically he's better" scenario. That kind of surgery is no walk in the park. I'm glad they're staying true to that.

What sucks is that they had to drag us through a badly executed dream in the middle of it all.

I'm pretty sure Booth's dream

I think that the ending was brilliant writing! Of course us fans wanted them to get together but watching the final minutes of that episode broke my heart and just made me think that Season 5 will be brilliant...also I really want to find out the aftermath of what Booth said. Booth & Bones will get together in time but right now I think that their relationship will strengthen as Bones has realised her feelings and Booth was able to picture them as a couple also please everyone stop hating on HH he is brilliant and knows what he's doing everythinh will happen eventually...

To all the people thinking that it was a flash forward, I highly doubt that. Hodgens narrates that "She's never seen a body and he was in the military and has seen too many". ALL of those people couldn't have changed that much in a year. I could partially believe the part where someone said that the first part, before the dream and a flash forward.

It seems like the only people who are really upset at this episode are the people who read all of the spoilers. I tried my best to not read too much into the spoilers that did come across my computer screen and I loved the episode. I loved seeing the lighter side of the gang and all the references to past episodes and to their actual jobs and such, hilarious.

I can't wait until Fall!!!

Random-
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this but I saw one of HHs twitters and it has me all twitterpated (no pun intended) for next season... "Giving Karine Rosenthal notes on her script "The Plain in the Prodigy" -- a tearjerker! Probably last notes before our hiatus." Specifically the "a tearjerker" part.

Rolywa said...

in response to theresa- the whole episode wasn't a flash forward...only the bed scene until the "light" when it is the next morning.

As much as I loved the ending as it was so emotional and heartbreaking and well acted by Emily and David I've been thinking...maybe the "Who are you" comment wasn't what we thought it was maybe his vision is blurred and he's still a bit drowsy and thought that it was a nurse or doctor speaking to him...well I hope so

[First of all,
Thank you so, Wendy for a beautiful blog, you are truly a blessing for all us fans.]

This is a sort of goodbye to the show for me, and a way to sort out this messed up state of mind I'm in.

I have come to the sad conclusion after this finale that HH does not intend to explore the depth of this beautiful rapport between B&B, but instead will use it AS A HOSTAGE/BAIT for fans to invest in the show.

The finale was sweet. Actually thought it could be a show of its own

But it has also been a rude awakening for me.

I thought that HH had created a powerful modern portrait of a relationship b/w two intense characters.

Now I realize that he wanted fans to think that, and to keep thinking that ... But the real development of the relationship will never occur.

I feel like I've been married to a guy for 4 years plus, loving him for a potential and depth of character, when IN REALITY he was just using my need to find someone like that as the wool over my eyes to manipulate me.

A la Liz Lemon:
"Blerg."

Theresa said...

Ah, I read it wrong. oops. lol

I've rewatched the beginning a few times...it's the same bed, same fixtures and everything. I did notice the ring though, but I'm hoping if it is a flash forward that it's more than a year. I'm not sure I want the show to take that big of a turn in only a year...maybe a series finale.

oh well, again, I can't wait until Fall!

cordy said...

@Theresa: I just meant that the bed-scene could possibly take part in the future.
The part after the big fade out was of course a dream or Brennans story. I actually think that it was Brennans story. She sits there writing as way to relieve the stress, her way of coping with the state of high emotional stress that Booths coma left her with. Maybe she reads the line out loud to Booth. It feels safe to open up herself, because he can't hear her. But somehow her words enter his subconscious and so he has this strange dream that felt so real.

Too absurd?

Anonymous said...

to Rolywa:
I don't think the bed scene was a flash forward as 'Bren' said to Cam that her and her husband had a "very satisfying roll around at 5o'clock this morning" so I believe the bed scene wasn't REAL...

Rolywa said...

OMG CHECK OUT HOW THE NIGHTSTAND CHANGES FROM WHEN SHE COMES IN TO THE NEXT MORNING

THE SEX SCENE WAS REAL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Zooey said...

And some last minute
save-face attempts:
(Prithee, allow me this last gasp!)

I am not feeling copped out about the sex being not real.
Sex does not mean a relationship.
I was looking forward to the soulsearching and character growth that would follow up to it.
When you have so much respect and love for someone, sex itself could be a burst of euphoria, the cherry of the top, for sure.
But the real bread&butter,
the real deal
is the growth, insight and
acknowledgement of responsibility that leads to sex.

That,
was what I thought I
would be getting,
and what I thought
B&B,
of all the other couples of TV
were TRULY CAPABLE of.

Argh.

Rolywa said...

To Anon,

I thought about that but could just be a coincidence to throw us off...if you look around the room it's different from the night to the morning (esp the nightstand and clock)

Rolywa said...

AND the walls are red in the first scene.....the rest of the show they are YELLOW!

Rolywa said...

AND in the AU she has a dresser on her side of the bed...in the first scene in bed THERE IS NO DRESSER!!!

Anonymous said...

Rolywa, yes but Bren is wearing the wedding ring and the red nail polish that she was wearing throughout that episode...

Anonymous said...

and also the walls are yellow in both scenes it is just the lighting...well the darkness because when you only see her feet when she enters the room the wall is a light colour

Rolywa said...

Ok, I'll give you that about the darker lighting/ect. BUT what is with the clock? That's the main thing...it goes from 4:43 to 05:47 or whatever the exact minute. Why do they explicitly show us the clock in both scenes and where does the 0 come from?

I took her wedding ring meaning this is some point in the future when they are married.

Anonymous said...

Okay...so I totally agree with you about the clock it went from the afternoon to the early morning that's interesting I didn't notice that before to be honest

Still haven't recovered from the disappointing episode.

They have pulled my leg and I truly think it is very unfair.

Anonymous said...

I have to say, I was extremely disappointed after watching this finale. However, I gave myself the rest of the night to calm down before getting online and venting. I even sat through the episode again to try to gain a better perspective. But it was hard.

I think the reason I am so upset has more to do with the show overall this season than it does with the fact that the B&B love scenes weren't real …enough maybe since someone along the lines on this blog brought up some interesting possibilities. I was torn by the alternate universe though. I saw people onscreen I didn't recognize let alone care about... and the end wouldn't have been bad if the rest of the episode had revolved around the cast dealing with the outcome of Booth's surgery instead of a fake crime story. While it was an interesting story, it was difficult to push 3 seasons of episodes aside to get into this new world.

Finding the links in the finale to episodes past just made me wish for seasons 1 and 2. I know the writers are supposedly trying to let the characters 'evolve' and 'develop,' but honestly I have asked myself many times this season "who is that?"
Brennan was clueless more than usual, couldn't even read facial expressions... Booth was a complete goofball, disrespecting the dead by thinking some looked like food, and stealing/carting a body around like "Weekend at Burnie's."

The whole baby, Stewie, Motley Crue stuff was such a cheap ploy. (Can anyone else smell shark?) Add to it hallucinations, dreams, alternate universe, tumor, and now amnesia... what show am I watching? Grey's? Ghost Whisperer? One Tree Hill?

I fell in love with this show because the characters felt real to me. I could empathize with them, understand them, and care about them. Now, I miss them. Bones used to be a smart, passionate, crime drama with heart... now they're trying to make it a comedy of sorts. I'm not saying it shouldn't have funny moments to it, but it used to be about more. To give us maybe 5 minutes of character development in a tag isn't enough to make up for episodes that didn't make me care about the victims let alone the main characters. The cases used to mean something, and it was the cases that furthered the development of the characters.

I've read fan fiction that would put the writers on Bones to shame. The characters have been so out of character lately. If you want to read something that is smart, funny, and full of the science and action that used to make up Bones, look up labsquint's journal online... that is how the show should be written.

Take note Bones writers-- fans shouldn't just eat up whatever you put together and then say it's good when it really isn't. It's your job, as PAID writers, to know your characters even better than the fans... I just hope you actually do and can find a way out of this huge hole you've dig this season.
I can't say I'm looking forward to season 5... I'm just simply waiting and hoping.

but i've watched it several times more...and now i like it..the problem is my expectations were too high, and every scoop and everything HH said...well, i guess i was expecting something else...
anyway, it's a good episode, but not for a season finale...i think they better have something really good for season 5...
and..i don't really understand the "meeting of two minds" thing...this is not a science fiction show, minds don't meet in real world... nor a soap opera show...it's a crime show! i wonder how they're going to fix the amnesia...

here's a twitter back-and-forth between Hart Hanson and a fan:

squint_girl @HartHanson Did you put two different clocks in the sex scene/waking up scene on purpose?

HartHanson @squint_girl Everything was done on purpose ... everything was done for a reason ... everything means something ...

.........OMG GUYS DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS???? that scene at the beginning MIGHT BE REAL. and might be set in the future.

First of all this is such a cruel way of ending a season.....how r we supposed to wait in anticipation for the next 3-4 months or so speculating whats gonna happen???Hoping and wishing for he best????

I still havent made up my mind about this episode...to be completely honest the whole season(except for a few brilliant episodes like Mayhem, Con-man And Girl in Mask)has been for a lack of a better word a damp squib....and thats really disappointing after all the spectacular seasons we got earlier...(except again for the Zack fiasco)

and now about the finale...i dunno what to say.. i neva hoped for an actual sex scene so i wasnt all that worked up...but it dint feel like a Bones episode at all...they were all different characters.....they werent Booth and Bones but Mr.B and Bren...

first time i saw it i dint understand what the hell was goin on...after rewatchin..it made sense though not entirely...they were interesting parallels between the AU and real life specially for Booths character..and the voiceovers in the beginning and the end made sense...my problem is that Brennan still thinks love is like opening up to "sufferings".....even though it was quite clear that she finally admitted to "herself" that she does love him i dunno if she has completely accepted that Booths worth the risks...and this whole amnesia thing certainly would make her believe that its not worth it....

i personally do not think they'll go with this amnesia crap...its not logical or rational thing to so ;).....it would be a complete waste of the character build-up they have done so beautifully for the last three years...

after reading so many comments on a different fan sites, after a long thinking and re-watching the ep again, I decided that I love the episode. and after all the news from today, HH's Twitter, I still think that in S5 we'll find out that the sex was real, there were a light after that and before the last scene, so I think that everything after 'that' scene and before the last was fiction... or whatever, and it's from the future,
season 5 could be so great after this ep. so I loved/still love/ it.
(if there are some mistakes in the text, I apologize, I'm from Czech REpublic, but I love Bones so much, best show ever!

Okay, so I have a few things so say.

First, I loved the episode, it was different, yes, but I still thought it was awesome.

The whole bed scene and kiss scene, in a way, I guess you would say, is sort of real. Brennan WAS writing it all, so what's that say about her feelings towards Booth? Not to mention her face when he asked "Who are you?", that almost killed me.
I suppose it wasn't real, but it really makes me wonder what's going on inside her head now. Even more so when "they" were married in the book and she was pregnant.

There is a ton you can learn from that episode, and I will say more after I watch it again, cause I'm sure I can find more reasons why it was a great episode. :)

Some posters are complaining that the sex scene was very tame. What did they expect? Did people really think that were going to see them naked? This is Network TV. I would have to admit I would have loved to see David Boreanaz nude. He is the one man that I compare every other man against. The thing that bothered me more was the kissing. It seemed very subdued. The Christmas kiss of last year was a KISS!!!. It was passionate and lovely. Here's hoping that the behind the scenes footage of this kiss shows up on YouTube.

Whitney said...

I was going to say the same thing about the bedroom vs. front doors. Also, with the walls and dresser in the sex scene: the wall is not "red," it is a shadow from the dresser. You can see "the red wall" is actually the dresser with stuff on top of it (look near the top of the screen, you can things on top like a shelf). So it's just the shadows that make the dresser look red, and since it's kind of hard to tell it's a dresser, that's why I though, like you, it was the wall)

With the sex scene. The ones with Sully were more "naked" (they had to photoshop out Emily's breast actually)...I didn't think the sex scene in the finale needed to be more risque...I just thought it was really tame and not as "going at it" as I thought it would be (if you watch the extended version of the Christmas kiss on youtube you can see what I mean...where did THAT passion go?? The passion that made me blush at watching these two actors have a private moment under the mistletoe, it seemed like they forgot the crew was there lol...not like in the finale)
