Tough Times in Hollywood

Variety has a bit of a nail-biter article that mentions the tightening belts in Hollywood, with the renewal of Bones as the main focus of the piece.

And it's not just bubble shows caught up in a tug-of-war. Just days before Fox was set to hold its Monday afternoon upfront meeting in New York, the net still didn't have a deal in place to bring back "Bones" -- despite the fact that it's from sister 20th Century Fox TV and that the show has helped turn the Thursday night lights back on at the network.

"Bones" is about to enter its fifth season, which usually reps the moment a show's license fee skyrockets as the studio looks to recoup its initial investment. And in this economic climate, the networks are looking to limit those big cost jumps as much as possible.

At issue: Because it's an internal deal between two News Corp. companies, the number shouldn't matter too much -- but with profit participants involved, the conglom has to make sure they're onboard first.

Hence a tough negotiation -- and the first major back-and-forth between the two sides since the Peter Chernin umbrella was removed. Insiders said 20th Century Fox TV made a few exploratory calls to see what the show might fetch elsewhere -- but they stress that ultimately they expect a deal will be done, possibly by this morning.

We should know at the beginning of the week, either way!

I don't think I'm actually worried. I don't THINK I am. Its ratings are good, they have the same parent company, and HH said earlier that it's already on the schedule. I'm trying to convince myself that I'm not actually worried.

Not worried. They can't kill bones, hell, they can't kill fringe. Not with the god-awful season House just capped. At the very least another season for our little show. They just want to make sure who's gonna pay for what and who's gonna get what in return.

It puts all of the wrangling over the season finale into perspective.

HH twittered "Waiting for news, lots of fuss, lots of phone calls, lots of worry and guessing and estimating ... and waiting..." half an hour ago...I'm thinking he'll twitter when he finds out their fate, I hope before next monday

HH just tweeted: "I truly believe that BONES'll be back for Season V. Business is business but there are very good relationships here and some smart people."

OMG they can't leave Bones with this, they have to have S5, I will actually cry (also because my life will lack a weekly viewing of DB!)

I doubt that they will cancel it, but what worried me is that if there is this much pressure this year, what will happen this time next year? aka is this going to be it's last season?

well if the jerks that be....errrr im sorry i meant the powers that be at fox stop dicking with the program and give it a season of NO pre-emptions and no jumping around from night to night, then i can see Bones going on to more then season 5 as it happens to be a decent ratings draw when left alone....

However, if fox turn out to be the nobs that they have been in the past with programs and decide not to renew Bones for next season, then i cant imagine some other smart channel not swooping in and stealing the show away for their own ratings draw!

Fox has no respect for this show as has been shown season after season, even though the show brings in strong ratings week after week so god only knows whats going to happen with it!!

The question I have is, if Fox doesn't realize what they have, would another network bother picking it up?

they renewed Dollshouse, for god's sake! fox just likes to screw up thing. blah!

I actually like Dollhouse... its a smart and interesting series. Plus they are a new show and it will cost less in salaries for them to continue on for another season unlike the problems that involve renewing a series for their 5th season.
