Booth in the lab and Brennan explaining things to him...

didn't see much of that in Season 4 so it's great.

Shannon said...

Did Booth say "I got you baby" when he's holding Bones after she's stabbed? I swear he did.

Stephanie said...

He did!! I should've hated that scene because of the fake scripted kiss, but that rescue scene was awesome! I'm guessing that was the romantic moment Hart promised us.

Anonymous said...

So where the hell was Brennan's scar/wound in the rest of the episode?

Amanda said...

Shannon - yes he did.

Would love to see more Lauper on future episodes.

Bones looked SO shocked when he admitted it, and seemed sad when he said "in a professional, atta girl kinda way." Anyone else see that?

Amanda said...

Yeah, and where WAS the wound? She bled A LOT and had nothing?

Miss Mary said...

how do I love thee? Cam Confessions.blowing raspberries.rankled.forehead kisses.average intellingence.KOT Lab.Carolines Car :)

Shannon said...

I know! I can't believe that they continuity people completely screwed that up.

Also, what is up with the music? It felt all Titanic-y when Avalon Harmonia tells Brennan that "he is dazzled by her"...

HH said everything would be explained in this episode concerning last years finale. I didn't feel any explanation. I think it stunk.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I agree that it did feel kind of aimless as far as resolving/following up on the finale. I enjoyed it, but as an episode, not as part of an arc.

Justin said...

i know! she looked like she was about to cry when booth told her "atta girl kinda way." and i hate it, but cams right: brennan's gonna be really messed up for life if sweets is right. and did anyone else see how booth looked hurt when brennan said that the clown thing would wear off? I think he realized that if his love of clowns wers off, so will his love for brennan.

i also laughed abnormally hard at caroline's little car. "That's right, cherie, you should kiss me. What's wrong with you, agent booth?"

I can't even leave all my thoughts here about this awesomeness that was this episode. I much preferred the sweet B&B when Brennan was attacked to the make-out B&B we were promised in the sides. It was just so desperate and tender, and the way he was chastely kisses her head, murmuring, "I got you, baby."

AWWW moment <3

Also: the millionth reason why I love Cam so much more than I originally intended. And the first reason I've ever had to hate Sweets. Our baby duck sure can drive a wedge...

Among other, little moments: King of the Lab!Hodgins, the fantastic new/old opening credits, Cyndi Lauper with her fun attitude, and Booth talking to a whole bunch of FBI Techs (hope there's more of that in the future!).

My brain is on Bones overload. Gotta go sleep or do yoga or something to relax before we can talk in civilized conversation :]

WoW, this was great, I loved so many moments, Cindy was wonderful and the rasberry part was fun and light hearted. The rescue was wonderful and who wouldn't love his arms rapped around them.. Great start!

YAY AWESOME EPISODE! i have been waiting all day to say that. I loved Brennan in this episode...she had very much a season 2 vibe (aka the ability to question suspects). I also caught the 'I caught you baby" and squeeled. I love cyndi Lauper and this episode definately sets us up for the season...Anyone else feel bad for Booth when Brennan wouldnt kiss him on the forehead? Can't wait for the next one!!

Jen said...

loved this epi!!!
I thought it did a great job of explaining the season finale.

My heart was aching when I saw the clown seen and realized that anything Booth currently felt or admitted to feeling would be under suspect, especialliy by our uber-rational Brennan.

Anonymous said...

Whats this raspberry part everyones talking about? Did i miss something?

Anonymous said...

Anyone know the song playing during the musical interlude in the first half?

Anonymous said...

Okay I am a little confused here....

This entire time, I was under the impression that the reason B&B couldn't admit their feelings for each other was because of the ever so famous "line" that couldn't be crossed. Too much at stake. Too much to lose.

Now all of a sudden, "the line" takes a back seat and Brennan's emotional vulnerability is the deterrent?

Has Booth forgotten all about the line that he drew?

I might not be making any sense...

---

All in all though, a very moving episode. My favorite scene was when Booth was sitting in his office, all dejected with Brennan's Blood on his shirt. He admits to Caroline that his intuitions aren't what they used to be.

I'm glad Bones is back, and I enjoyed the episode, but generally speaking it felt very awkward to me. I feel like they should have dropped the case and just focused on the characters getting re-situated after the events of the end of last season. Trying to merge a case with bringing everyone back together just didn't work for me. It was very choppy and the order of events seemed really off.

Also, was it just me or did Booth look really haggard? Aside from his opening scene in Sweets's office when he had the stubble and was really energized, he just looked old. Perhaps that was appropriate though given his recent trauma and newfound uncertainty/lack of confidence in himself. Now that I think more about it, I really admire DB's acting in this episode. This unsure, burdened Booth is not one we've really scene before. I think I'm going to enjoy DB's portrayal of Booth 's confusion and finding his way back over the next few episodes.

I did enjoy Cyndi Lauper's character and the scenes between her and Booth and/or Brennan.

I thought the rescue scene was very fake. While the romantic side of me loved Booth holding Brennan and whispering loving/soothing words to her, I never in a million years think Brennan would have acted like such a wuss in that situation. In a prior episode with Gormagon, she was bombed and flipped over in a car, and walked away saying "I'm fine...only a flesh wound." So the knife in the forearm seemed a bit overdone. She's tougher than that.

I do really enjoy Booth wrestling with his feelings for Brennan. Loved the admission to CAM at the bar. I'm so going to love this battle between his brain and his heart. I can already imagine an episode at the end of this season where he finally tells Brennan that it's been a year since the surgery and his feelings haven't faded. He may have started hating clowns again months ago, but he still loves her. (hey...a girl can dream)

Hmmm...so much more. But this is already too long. I will have to watch it again before I say more.

Nano said...

We have all been convinced that ever since that epi where gordon gordon had mentioned that one of them is a aware of their feelings and deals with it every day. Many of us thought it was booth. But while sweets was showing booth his brain scans before the sugery sweets had said that the "love"part of his brain was not active at all. In my opinion the hour or so before his surgery it seemed like a very lovey dovey intense feeling moment. So maybe booth was not aware of his feelings (until now) and it brennan dr.wyatt was refering to??? I making a giant leap and it probably doesnt make any sense but thats what i was thinking near the end of the episode. Ignoring that it was an amaizng episode!! Loved every second of it!Rescue scene (dies and goes to heaven)

Anyone else notice how Emily was limping in her walking scenes?? From her broken toe....

tybonium said...

I loved this episode! Although I don't think everything from the finale is explained, I think it is a good start.

Did anyone else notice that Angela delivered virtually exactly the same like in this episode as in the finale. She walks into Brennan's office saying "Awkward". In the finale it was about the drawing on the napkin, and in this episode is was that the psychic's sister was a murder victim.

I wonder if HH is going to sprinkle things like that in multiple episodes that that, when we go back and watch the finale, it will have even more in-jokes.

clairebear_nz said...

Better than I expected. Not hard but I'm very thankful.

Fay said...

Besides the "I got you baby" scene others have mentioned, one of my fav. scenes is when Booth looks at the newspaper clippings of him and Bones. It is "Fearless" by Cyndi Lauper, by the way. Nice pick for soundtrack :)

Anonymous said...

tybonium,

i noticed the same thing! i thought wait, haven't i seen this exact scene before. clearly it had to be intentional. i have half expecting booth to say something about it. very curious where this leads in the next episodes.

Anonymous said...

Well, i think the rescue was really fake, i mean, brennan KNOWS how to kick someone's ass!! so now she just runs with no direction and protects herself with her arm instead of confronting him like in the old times?? I agree with the "tougher brennan", although she might had been in an emotional moment with all the Avalon's cards and booth's coming back.

Love angela, sweets, hodgins and cam!! well, obviously Caroline too.
The show kinda implicitly answered to me why did brennan leave booth. She left being confused but she seemed to had left doctors taking care of everything, i guess she couldn't be around him because of medical directions, specially when booth was thinking of her as his wife, that can't be healthy while recovering.

Somewhere between the end, the scar is visible. Anyway, no bandage or stitches?? I really imagined the whole rescue soo much better... those sides played me so bad!

Anonymous said...

I would love after this a super dramatic ep.! how long have we been without one of those???

Dijea said...

I thought Cyndi Lauper was AMAZING and incorporating her music into the episode was even better. I really liked the quirky almost smile when Harmonia told Booth he found something in his coma.

I think Booth's "Reclaiming" of himself will take longer than one episode. Which will keep me waiting for the next episode. I also think that he is more afraid that he'll hurt her, than his love for her will go away. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I'm a silly romantic, but I really love these characters. I would be sad if their getting together causes them to not work together.

I missed not having an intern and think this should have been expanded. The case didn't get enough time & neither did the relationship. Should have expanded it to 2 hours.

The rescue scene was great and I loved the "I got you babe." even if the kiss was a little stiff. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Hope you all had great summer's/winter, and i look forward to chatting to you all over the season, which, if this first episodes anything to go by.. will be a cracking good one!!

firefairyangel said...

Excellent episode. I also noticed how sad Booth looked when Brennan said the clown thing would wear off...someone here pointed that out. He probably realizes that it's possible that his feelings for her are because of changes to his brain...but does that mean he didn't realize he was in love with her before? I always was under the impression that he knew.

Miss Mary said...

Booth has always been in Love with Brennan. That brain scan is crappolla....perhaps the love meter was a little off because as the scan was happening he was a little preoccupied with you know....a brain tumor!? Okay rant over....sorry......

I also wonder about Sweets motivation....remember like Gordon Gordon before him, his job is NOT to get the partners into bed. His job is to make sure they are the most effective FBI team possible. Perhaps he is TRYING to drive a wedge....Remember timing is everything and if the timing is bad and it blows up...YIKES.

I think Sweets may have "doctored" those images to suit a higher goal.....just my two cents.....

Stephanie said...

Rolywa, I noticed Emily limping a little, too. I didn't see it when I watched online last night, but I noticed it tonight when I watched on my regular TV. Not surprised, considering Emily only broke her toe three or four days before filming started. I'm also thinking that wasn't her running down the doctor's hallway, since the camera focused on her feet running and didn't show her face.

I always thought Brennan was the one Gordon-Gordon was referring to. But did anyone else think it was a little odd that Sweets was trying to convince Booth he doesn't love Brennan? Sweets used to be one of the bigger B&B fans on the show, haha. That was the only part of the episode I didn't really like.

Oh, and I loved Cyndi Lauper. They can bring her back anytime.

Kate said...

Really hesitant, but this worked out okay. They set up the rest of the season well, which will be more of the same with a little extra snuggles. Which is good, because angsty, off-kilter Booth is no good.

Also, I think the writers were trying to show Brennan letting herself be comforted by Booth. It was still hokey, but well-intentioned. Don't know how she could have missed the head kiss and the "babe/baby" though.

Let the record show I am a hopeless romantic.

ok, did anyone else love it when hodgins hugged brennan?? they never seemed to really be friends, which i found stupid since they were supposed to have known eachother the longest out of everybody, so i loved that bit :)
and when booth didnt take bones to breakfast, she looked really sad, so thats cute
lol that she sat on him..
i loved this ep!!

it might've just been me, but there was just an air about the episode that just made it feel weird. it was strange, but it was good.

I actually loved the rescue scene. Who cares if it was a bit "out of character." It was nice to see Brennan's softer side. Let poor Booth have his tough guy to the rescue moment for once.

...guess Brennan missed the "I got you baby" stuff because she was loosing a lot of blood. She was probably experiencing shock - like me :) I had to replay the scene a few times to make sure I wasn't hearing things.

P.S. Even though Booth whimped out on the "I love you" thing, I thought Brennan's "I love you, too" was precious.

I loved the tone of the episode, it felt more like the Bones we know than much of S4. we had some great momens, like when Brennan sits on Booth, the hugs, Caroline, Booth with Brennan in the lab. I loved it when Brennan said 'Would you like me to kiss you on the forehead too?' and then Booth closed his eyes waiting for it; and the smile on his face when she walked away - gorgeous!

I'm not too fussed about there not being a Booth/Brennan kiss: I knew there was a chance that the scene was fake and anyway it might have felt wrong this early on.

I liked the music playing while each member of the team did their own thing - felt like 'Woman in the Tunnel', but I was kind of annoyed by the constant underscore in the first half - we don't need that much music to emphasise the tension, or their feelings.

I was kind of annoyed that we didn't see much of the squints either, the case felt sort of flat and the episode a bit rushed, as if they just wanted to tie in a case - we didn't have the usual twists and interesting sciencey parts. Brennan's comment about 'boring normal murders' bothered me too - yes, she has developed an interest in working on odd, difficult cases with Booth, but I want to see the Brennan that cares for human life again.

Loved the whole romantic Booth holding Brennan thing at the end, but how could she just walk in there! Brennan is not that stupid! If someone, who has already behaved suspiciously, is out of sight and tells me to 'lock the door' as I come in, I'd be slightly wary and would not lock the door!!

I'm glad we got to see some conpiracy-theory Hodgins again. And Cyndi Lauper was great.

Anonymous said...

Like the majority of fans I enjoyed this episode. I loved the look on booths head after Bones never kissed his fore head and walked away but I like the way she looked round. And now I really am convinced that it was bones Gordon Gordon was referring too. for one thing the look on Brennan's face when Avalon told her the answer to the question she could not ask herself out loud and also when booth says sometimes you have to settle for second best at the end she knew what that meant. but overall great episode for me.

Great season opener.
I loved B&Bs reunion, loved the rescue scene, didn't miss a kiss, that would have been too much and too early.
I loved Cindy Lauper, she was just perfect for that role.
Loved the rest of the team, Angela, Hodgins especially Cam. Didn't like Sweets. What the hell was wrong with him? Was he blind for the last two years? Or why could he even presume that Booths feelings for Brennan were caused by his coma?

Jeannie said...

I'm with all of you who loved this episode! Great follow-up to the season 4 finale (which I thought was brilliant, by the way). Packed with goodies, and a lot of them have been mentioned already.

The episode didn't seem rushed to me, in fact, I kept thinking that this must be more than 45 minutes.

I only had 2 nitpicks and I think they've been mentioned as well already: First, where were Brennan's martial arts skills during the scene with the doc? And second, how could she walk right into the Psych's home alone again after that same thing had backfired on her only moments ago???

To the poster who questioned Sweet's motives: I think it was totally in character that he was trying to alert Booth to the fact that his current feelings for Brennan might be a result of the coma. He even explained it - if they prove to be only temporarly and he loses Brennan's trust, that will be the end of that successful working relationship, so he was in fact protecting the interests of the FBI, just as his job description requires him to. He might still think that Booth is indeed in love with Brennan but the timing was bad, that's all.

I even thought that the case was really good! Liked the ending where they couldn't charge him with murder but found something else. "Sometimes you have to settle for second-best." Heh. And for all the shippers out there, there was the "This will work out eventually". AWWEE. ;-)

I don't think Booth winked out on the 'I love you'. Somebody already said it - Brennan wouldn't have believed him anyway, with the clown incident only seconds previous. (Clever, HH!:-)) So he made the best out of it. (And he was rewarded with an 'I love you, too', wasn't he? Plus, Brennan could already get a bit used to hearing it from him for that time when he'll say it for real).

In short: loved the episode. Happy to be back! Looking forward to a great season with all of you!

Trubinator said...

This was probably the best season opener they've had in a long time. I really appreciated how many moments of genuine emotion they showed. But I was disappointed at the resolution of Booth and Brennan's storyline. To me, the "I love you ... in an atta girl kinda way" line was just a cop out to avoid any serious revelation.

They really should have used the brain tumor as a real catalyst for a season-long arc of change.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the comment that this Bones epi should have been a two hour show. Remember the season 4 opener in London? That was two hours and there was so much less to cover.

I thought the episode was rushed and kind of all over the place. It is the characters that keep me coming back more so than the writing.

Anywho, I was sad when Booth took back his "I love you" comment. I am hoping that this is not the shows way of giving the viewers partially "what we want" (B&B together) without commiting to a show in which they have to make these two work together while in a romantic relationship.

I think the writers and producers are worried that once B&B have established a romantic relationship they won't know how to keep the momentem of the show up. I mean the show is good but lets face it.. it is B&B, the team and their relationships that keep us watching. Right? Thats the way it is for me anyway.

I hope that I am wrong and that this season the writers of Bones will prove to me that they are capable of keeping the show going while B&B are getting married and having babies :)

Well "Bones is back baby"!!!!!i dont think i am a fan of this epi..not yet anyway...n i certainly do not think it was the best season opener of bones till date...
things that bothered me..
1)booth says he hates clowns at he beginning of the epi in his session with Sweets n then at the end he finds them funny...how so??i still wonder...
2)the episode was too fast-paced(dint anyone else think so???)one scene rushing after the other...
3)i think the whole "beneath Brennan's hard exterior lies a warm heart" card was payed a little too much...we were reminded of that like what 3-4 times!!!dont we all know that...
4)i agree the rescue was kinda fake too..brennan can kick some serious ass..but well i'll let that pass...after all it was romantic..
5)no bandages..stiches..how is that possible???

and now to things that i liked..
1)Cyndi Lauper was amazing!!!!bring her back guys..
2)DB's acting was really good in this epi..
3)Cam!!!!gotta love her..she rocked thru the whole epi..
4)"what is that??? graph of Russian wheat production in 1955"...Ha!!
5)the end scene..though i was hoping for the traditional BB tag scene..but "this all works out eventually" thing worked for me just fine..(very telling wasnt it???)

well..overall i think it was an OK epi..it will be interesting to see how all these things r gonna be played out in the episodes to cum...

PS. i noticed Caroline had the
same car in Judas(which got crushed btw)LOL!!!

Well, to me this was a very good episode. I think some people is looking for a perfect one wich just can't happen because perfection doesn't belong in a tv series. Lower your expectations people, and just enjoy, this is a great show.
Someone wrote that David looks strange: I guess he lost weight, his cheekbones kind of pop out, and he's got darker hair...or is it just my impression?
the summer really took my thoughts away from bones, but now...I'm officially obsessed again!!!! Have a happy bones season, everybody!!!

In regards to what Sweets did...

I too think he just pulled a "Gordon Gordon" on them. Angela just didn't get a chance to tell him that he is full of it (like she told Dr. Wyatt when he tried to downsize their connection). They did, however, let Avalon discredit Sweets and the neurosurgeons instead (when she explained that "they don't know jack" about the heart).

Even so, I didn't like that part either. I think Booth was really disappointed when Sweets told him. He wanted Avalon to give him an alternate explanation. I think he wanted her to be right. (He did seem to perk up in the end when she told him that it would all work out eventually.)

He really didn't seem to believe Sweets. He just got confused is all. He just wants to be sure like Cam told him. At the very least, he knows how much he loves Brennan as a friend. He wouldn't want to hurt her.

A "Hopeful" Romantic said...

I've been watching shows with this same scenario since I was a kid. The lead characters always fall in love but don't usually admit it...unless they're getting close to the series finale. Let's hope that they keep this going for many more seasons.

Most of us would like to see a good love story ending for B&B but I think that it would be just that...an ending. For me, the romantic tension between the two characters has always been more exciting.

Heather Warren said...

I loved it.

LOVED IT!!

I think that Sweets intentions are pure.

He wanted to warn Booth not to jump in the deep end with Bones too soon. That if these feelings go away that it will really hurt her.

I think that it was the same kind of advice that Cam gave him.

Anyway, though I LOVED the rescue scene - it was totally overdone a bit. Bren can kick more ass, and has before.

She did however, take great comfort with him being there. After he says "I got you baby" and kisses her, she totally snuggles into her deeper - which made me flutter.

All in all, I think that Hart Hanson will give us what we want... we just have to enjoy the ride. BB belong together - it WILL happen.

Here's to a great season 5!!

Anonymous said...

If it makes anyone feel better, I think Brennan and Booth will (at the least) end up like Mulder and Scully - only better.

The X-Files was my last favorite show and Scully and Mulder started out with the same little "let me hold you in my arms and kiss you on the head sorta thing"...but by the end of the series they're cuddled up in bed.

Flashback: Remember that HH even threw the "Who are we? Mulder and Scully?" joke into the pilot episode.

Anonymous said...

In defense of Sweets, I believe he said that, if Booth successfully breaches Brennan's defense mechanisms and let's her down, he will ruin her life so he better be sure he really means it. In this sense, the comment rings true. He is protecting Brennan. That Booth finds this gives him pause is what feels contrived to me. The need to keep the will they won't they plot line going is turning the fascinating characters into caricatures.

gabriel said...

First of all, I'm so happy they're back! LOL ...although I have ambiguous feelings. It's OK they don't rush the relationship, there's plenty of time to have it blossom. Those who criticize Booth's behavior (that he was fully aware of his love for Brennan before, with which I agree) don't forget what HH and DB told in the interviews, ie. Booth has to start from base one again, he is confused about everything, what he feels for Brennan, too. I think this part is built up very well, it's in character. No sense in telling Brennan he loves her when he is not totally the man he used to be.
However, I was sad to see Brennan being so lame in a fight scene with a fat guy (she almost beat the FBI agent in Two Bodies, now she is running away?), for the first few seconds I was truly afraid for her life, then I asked myself: hey, where is the kick-a** girl we knew? Also was extremely annoyed by the no wounds/bandage in the interview room - rather have her wear a long sleeve thing than show off her healthy arm!!! Come on! It's still a forensic show and people watching it care about these tidbits.
Maybe it's only me wondering but I really don't see why everyone knows exactly what happened to Booth while in a coma (what he was dreaming/Brennan writing) in the finale (OK, except for the pregnancy). I mean Sweets must know it, it's professional, but Cam, Angela? Who's been gossiping? If it was just in his head and Brennan deleted the book... Anyway.
I think they really tried to put every ingredient in the opening episode: there was lab stuff (if you miss the technical part, there you've got Hodgins with the clothing analysis), bones stuff, Caroline, Sweets called in the case, talking over the counter, action and lots of feelings (that's why we're watching it right?). OK, the case itself was not a big victory for the couple, but that makes it even more real. It takes time to get back in the saddle. Which I am eager to see. And I truly enjoyed this episode despite its flaws.
Before I went to bed, however, I had this strange feeling that there is still a chance they separate B&B (with DB saying 'What if they never get together?' ringing in my head). Please don't do that, I would never be able to watch the show again if they went apart.

gal.kv said...

Could the whole Bones-not-quite-kicking-ass-thing show development in the sense that she doesn't always have to be strong and put up walls for self-protection/to shut people out since those around her, especially Booth, have shown that they can be dependable? She seems to be a bit more vulnerable now than in the past.
Or am I totally not making any sense? :P

gabriel said...

Actually, have you thought about it this simply: it took a brain tumor for this man to let his deeply buried feelings surface and now he really wants to act on them? He was given a second chance in life so why not take the risk and get what/who he wants? That's what we want to see!

gabriel said...

I think you don't want to be vulnerable when someone tries to jab a scalpel in you. Especially not our Brennan who hasn't done anything like this in the past 4 years. And she should know better by now then going after suspects on her own. That's just my opinion. ;-)

Anonymous said...

Did anyone else see that Booth wanted to kiss Brennan too - in Caroline's car? He stopped dead in his tracks when Caroline asked what was wrong with him. I thought it was cute :)

Also...Did anyone else think that the part where Bones is "playing" with the hole in the skull was very "suggestive" in nature? Booth even cringed...and there wasn't anything gruesome about it. Then, Angela comes in with her "awkward" comment.

If you ask me, Brennan had a very flirty look in her eyes from the start of that scene. She was being all scientific, but underneath, the scene seems very "playful."

Loved the episode OMG the rescue scene (swoon) the kiss on her head, saying I got you baby just shows his love, telling her he loved her and then saying in an adda girl kinda way hmm I guess he mentioned the adda girl because of what happened with the clown in that scene was he doubting his feelings ? The look on Bones face and yes I also thought that Booth was gonna kiss Bones after kissing Caroline great episode seen it 4 times what ?! I´m not Bones obsessed not at all ;-)

Thanks everybody for keeping this discussion episode-related! I really appreciate it since I'm trying to stay spoiler-free.

Wendy, how about a 'favorite quotes' post for this episode?

Anonymous said...

Okay, I liked the episode overall, but I felt like the case itself really took a backseat, not that I don't like Booth/Brennan. Also, I'm so frustrated witht hat whole Booth&clown thing, so we can't REALLY know if it's all true or just a side effect. OH well.... Rescue scene overall was cute, but I agree that Brennan seemed a bit weak considering all her martial arts training. But the end was adorable :D

melanie said...

I think Sweets just want Booth to wait to tell Brennan how he feels. She knows what's been happening (especially the not-hating-clowns scene), so anything he would tell her right now would be suspect. I don't honestly think Sweets doubts Booth's feelings.

I also think Brennan looked disappointed when Booth added the "atta-girl kind of way" qualifier after saying he loved her...And she looked so bereft when he didn't want to have breakfast with her!

It was fun trying to watch him work up the nerve, and then get the time alone with her to tell her how he felt. And then he copped out!

The school filter system doesn't let me post comments anymore! :( Had to wait til I got home.

I can't believe I missed the 'I got you, baby'! (Well I did watch the episode in a bit of a hurry)
Got it the second time!

Anon(9:32 am), yeah I thought there was something in the scene when Brennan showed Booth the hole in the skull! Though I got that from the way they looked at each other. It was one of those subtle moments which screamed sexual tension - loved it!

And I did think he was going to kiss Brennan as well, in the scene in Caroline's car!

In terms of the case, this episode didn't do so well, but regarding the characters, it was great! Looks like they've set things up well for the rest of the season, but I hope we get a build up of semi-subtle moments in teh next few eppys.

Wonderful beginning! Can't wait for the next one. And isn't the NET a marvellous thing! We don't get the new episodes here in Sweden until way later in the Autumn, but I just downloaded and watched Ep 1. Loved it.

I am having a really hard tiome concentrating today as I keep repeating the all the great scenes in my mind. I don't know about the rest of you, but I was in complete Bones withdrawl!

I have read many takes on the episode this morning and by far my favorite, and the one I am going to go with (and this is by no menas a spoiler as it is a guess) is that Bones is the one Gordon Gordon was talking about in Mayhem, and the one Sweets "saw" the attraction in. First, this would fit in with Avalon telling Bones about the question she is afraid to ask and the look on Brennan's face. (Did anyone else completely SWOON when she used the word "dazzled"?) Second, this would explain why Sweets is trying to protect her, he wants to make sure Booth's feelings are as real as hers.

I would love to see this season do a cool 180 and have Brennan be the one in love. What a cool twsit that would be.

As many have already said, David's new take on an awkward Booth is really awesome.

Thank goodness it is only 6 more days till another episode!

I thought last night's show ruled.. great set up for the season.

I had a thought about why the brain scans were the way they were. Booth is a romantic guy, now he kept everything in check regarding his love for Bones due to the line and other reasons and since he wasnt hooking up with anyone in YEARS, of course his brain sections dealing with love and romance were not working. BUT when he woke up from the "coma dream" realizing he wants what he had in the dream and wants to share his life with Bones, everything is on high alert. what does everyone think?

CCB

Jessica said...

Yes I think so to he has been in love with Brennan for a long time it was so obvious in season 4,(the dream just made him realize it more, as Avalon said to Booth that he didn´t lost anything in the coma he gained something and then a little smile appears on his face) you know in the episode mayhem on the cross when they go over to invite Sweets for dinner at Booth´s place Brennan got Booth to tell something
about his past though he always made it very clear to Sweets he didn´t want to talk about his past but she got him to tell something and btw when he tells it he looks at Brennan and not at Sweets that made it clear for me that he has feelings for Brennan and that he does everything to please her

Lawcodename said...

I'm so glad our show is BACK! I liked it a lot, despite the continuity errors (no arm wound?) and the fact that Brennan seemed caught off-guard by the Doctor's attack.

As for B&B, I was pretty happy with how they resolved the situation set up by last season's finale. I'd feared he wouldn't recognize her at all, and so grateful they didn't go with the amnesia idea for long! I think Booth was in love with Brennan all along, but had done a pretty good job of fooling himself into denying it, or downplaying it, until Brennan's book showed him just how good it could be. Now that he's aware of the possibilities, he's unable to bury his feelings anymore. That's my take on it, anyway.

I do have one question: when Sweets warns Booth in Booth's office, I can't quite make out Sweet's final words on the subject, and with his back to the camera...could anyone tell what he said in that moment?

Mary Ellen said...

Hey guyz!!!! Finally Bones is back!!!
Yeah, I've been thinking about it too. Booth has always loved Brennan, no way someone could say otherwise. I agree with what anonymous and Jessica said. No way Booth wasn't in love before the surgery.
The episode was AWSOME. I loved it, like every episode of the show. I really missed the adrenaline Bones gives me. I'm happy to be back on track! I ca'nt wait for next week!
I really loved the Cam/Booth talk in the bar, and all B&B moments. The way he burst in to save her was just so...wow!
Avalon is great! Great character! I'd like to see her more often, if that could be possible!^^
Anyways, happy Bones talk to everybody. Happy Bones day! Happy Bones everything!

I totally agree that Booth was reaching out to Brennan last season - not Sweets (In Mayhem on the Cross). He definitely looked like he was feeling something when he went to touch her hand (on his pocket) but she had already moved it away. His puppy dog face was so adorable.

In this episode, however, they did seem to switch over to Brennan as far as the "looks" are concerned (i.e. the disappointment over no breakfast date with Booth and the confused look over the "atta girl" thing). She seems to be the one who is looking for a deeper connection now.

...and last season she did say that she wanted to believe in love the way that Booth and the others do...and Booth promised her that she would someday. Maybe someday will be soon.

Lawcodename said...

Thanks, em-jay! The not knowing was killing me! :-)

maya grace said...

my favorite bit was when bones sat on booth in the office :) haha that was just classic. yeah the rescue was a little forced but i think it will serve a higher purpose in future episodes? and although i don't think sweets doctored the xrays i'm thinking there's more to his side than we know just yet. he may be trying to protect brennan because he's attatched to both of them, together - imagine what their breaking apart would do to them, not to mention their duckling sweets!

maya grace said...

ok one more inconsistancy, prolly been caught already but too bad. in the very beginning when Booth is talking to Sweets, he's listing off the reasons why he's fine and he says "...you are not a singing bartender, and I hate clowns." then in the end he's all surprised when Brennan tells him he doesn't like clowns...? hmm.

em-jay said...

I agree, Lawcodename--It drives me crazy when I can't catch a line or a word! I'm always afraid I'll miss something good.

Anonymous said...

Maybe the clown thing is a sign that he really is ready to open up and accept his feelings for Brennan - just like he accepted the clown. It doesn't have to be a negative thing meaning his feelings aren't real. Besides that, I'm sure he really doesn't want to shoot at clowns anymore and have to get re-evaluated. :)

Did anyone notice that Hodgins is back to his conspiracy theories on everything? I'm not sure how I feel about that since he abandoned that last season.

gabriel said...

I don't know if Booth was really suppressing his feelings in the previous seasons. I had the idea that he was aware of them, just waiting for her to catch up (promising her she would find love one day etc.). I don't remember the whole scene just Booth almost yelling at Sweets that "by now you should know you can't rush her". I think the writers are still working along this idea.

Jessica said...

To Maya Grace

I think Booth is saying all these things to Sweets because he is going stircrazy not being able to suit up again so maybe he is saying these things so Sweets thinks he is ready to go back to work and and be with Brennan again.

He has always been aware of his feelings. If you look at the therapy session in the episode that Brennan is dating two guys at the same time and both of them broke up with her, she says that she will never be in a relationship and Booth gives her the look and says it will happen she just has to be open enough to see it maybe that was just a little hint that she has to be open to see his feelings for her and in last nights episode it looks like she begins to acknowledge these feelings slowly but surely she looked a bit sad when he didn´t went to breakfast with her and the with the I love you in a atta girl kinda way

Anonymous said...

Loved this episode and can't wait for the rest of this season to play out!

I wasn't much of a fan of Brennan running from the fat doctor and not kicking ass (as she normally would) either, but I can think of a practical reason why it might of happened - Emily's toe was broken, so maybe it would have been too complicated to try to work in a stunt double for the scene and the only other solution was to have Brennan not fight back. Maybe...

Anonymous said...

I am totally agree with Lawcodename comments.
And have to add that HH, DB, and ED did a great job on showing B&B feelings. But HH has to keep up with intelligent of the show regards main scope of relevancy to crime solving. If not, he has to add to romance to fill up the void. If he focus more on romance, he can't keep them separate for long. If we have more romance than crime, he has to add more juice. And that means soap opera.

Hart Hanson is the genius in this series. here we are all talking about our favourite bits of the episode and there are so many different bits we are all pointing out. I dont know about anyone else but I have watched this about 6 times now because of the wee bits you fans are pointing out that I missed before and I want so see what I thought. in the rescue scene has anyone noticed that Bones is nodding her head when Booth is comforting her and whispering to her and she is grabbing his arm.

Stace said...

Just a thought on the continuity of the wound from Bones...A scalpel blade isn't very large and wouldn't leave a long cut if stabbed directly into someone's arm. It would bleed a lot, but would probably be easy to close the injury using skin adhesive and wouldn't necessarily need a bandage. Just trying to offer an alternative explanation.

Jessica said...

Same here have seen this episode over and over again to see all the bits that were pointed out and because I keep seeing new things and I also saw that Brennan was completely trusting Booth and holding on to him, it looks like she's feeling comfortable in his arms when he is holding her and telling her he is there for here and isn't going anywhere and my favorite bit the kiss on her head and telling her 'I got you baby'

Wendy said...

Marcella, feel free to re-comment without the spoilers :) I deleted yours b/c of them.

I was thinking that to a little cut would bleed a lot but is pretty easy to close but you would expect a bandage, btw I couldn't hear what Booth said to Caroline in his office

I miss the Cocky belt buckle. Wonder if that will come back in the next episode....maybe he isn't fully back until the belt buckle. :)
I loved the episode. Hated that they didn't even show a bandage or scar after Bones' injury. Loved his rescue. How could he have already called the Ambulance? Was he that faithful in the physic??

Anonymous said...

After being v dissappointed in last seasons finale - not because B&B didn't get together for real, as I don't want to see that, but because we were specifically told it wouldn't be alternate reality and it was! I felt HH and co did some major kissing up to the fans in this episode, but perhaps just a tweak too much? Don't get me wrong I enjoyed this episode and for many reasons suggested by you all, it had sneaks of the earlier seasons and things we liked. But I do feel they realised with the outcry of last season that they were on the line so to speak with fans and had some major making up to do. We went from v little expression of feelings to alot in one episode.....still might set up some interesting plots for the future

as much as i LOVE all the love and tension being so front-and-center, finally--- the two best 'romantic' moments were the 'i got you baby' and the brennan flirtily teaching booth about forensics. those are the sorts of things ive been waiting for forever! but the awkward kiss moments, the advice to not go for it, the egging on of the psychic i had real love/hate feelings for because--- well, EVERYONE watching knows, and everyone on the show SHOULD already know, that these two have been in love a long time. and while the coma was maybe a smart device for bringing the feelings to the surface while buying more time till the characters get together, we KNOW that its just buying time. and so it will only pay off if, like wendy says, we have the satisfaction of seeing the real progression of these characters towards being together from episode to episode. they cant go back to how they used to be- there needs to be a 'i got you baby' moment or awkward almost kiss moment in every episode. there were a million in this one so that bodes well. not gonna lie, the episode had me jazzed for this season.

but I ALSO dont want Hodgins and cases and the fun of the actual cases and everything to be taking such a backseat all the time either. what a tricky show this must be to write at this point.

god i love it so much

Nina said...

how genius is this show. i totally trust that they will not only get these characters together (harmonia straight up promised us) but that it will be done in a truly brilliant way. i personally like to believe that once they decided to act on the characters chemistry they had to plan out the whole arc and really are straight up just giving us the best version of them getting together that they can possibly think up without making the whole series about this one thing.

also, i did not miss the interns at all.

Anonymous said...

It looks like Brennan's "people skills" may be improving this season. Did anyone notice how she actually sounded a little bit "flirty" when the Doctor asked if they had a warrant and she said, "Do we need one" while giving him a little smile and doing this cute little thing with her eyes? (Halfway looking at him but glancing at Booth as if for approval on how she was asking and not necessarily for an answer) The Doctor still said they needed the warrant but I give her credit for trying.

Is there a little bit of a role reversal thing going on here? Flirting with witnesses and suspects to get information is usually Booth's thing. It was very subtle but I still think it was there...and she did feel comfortable going back to visit him alone.

Marie said...

did anyone comment yet on the fact that NOBODY is questioning the fact that brennan must love booth??

otherwise they wouldnt give the advice 'be sure before you tell her so you dont break her heart', they would be going 'well do you know how SHE feels?'

also, more caroline!!!!! she rocks!

was it just me or was the psychich just a little TOO precise about everything? kind of left nothing to the imagination. like one of those characters that exist in a book simply to point out and explain the things around them?

Anonymous said...

Maybe no one is questioning Bones' love for Booth because she really is the one that Gordon Gordon was referring to. Maybe everyone else has seen what he saw. I always thought he was referring to Booth but maybe not.

Way back when Booth faked his death, Angela referred to him as someone Brennan loved. Brennan is the one who didn't want to sail away with someone else...She always makes a fuss about being with Booth...and she does "struggle" with her feelings all the time. That's a much bigger struggle than Booth would have. I think she realizes that she has feelings for Booth but that she doesn't understand them since she doesn't believe in matters of the heart like that...but she admitted that she wants to.

I think Cyndi Lauper's song that's playing describes Bones' struggle perfectly. I think she too wants to know what would happen if she was "Fearless." Check out the lyrics if you didn't notice. It's really quite fitting...lyrics like "When I find myself slipping off of my pedestal, I'm a fierce believer afraid to fall."

Anonymous said...

Another great line from the lyrics to Cyndi's song...

"And if I was helpless ...Could you be the one comes rushing in." I think Brennan totally got her answer in the rescue scene.

Anonymous said...

BTW...

I think Cyndi's character, Avalon, was like a narrator to get any new fans up to speed. Everyone watching doesn't know the history of the show like we do. It was much better to add character to it than to do the "previously on Bones" thing like some shows do after cliffhangers.

Anonymous said...

ok, a couple of thoughts.. i think sweets and cam basically did the same thing, which was to make sure that booth's affections didn't end up hurting brennan. if he really loves her, it will bear out over time, and she's much more likely to take a declaration of love seriously later on, when he's in his right mind. sweets just used a little tough love to make his point.

re: the part where brennan didn't kick the crazy doctor's butt and ran away instead (total running body double). y'all remember that emily broke her toe like four days before shooting started for harbingers. she was probably a little limited in how many round-house kicks she had in her and how much weight she could put on it doing her own stunts. brennan rarely plays the damsel in distress, relax. she won't suddenly be a wuss in season 5. emily is a producer and she wouldn't put up with it. remember in the beginning when hart promised her she would rescue booth before booth rescued her.

i totally dug the scene on the floor. hopeless romantic.

i just about pee'd when booth turned her down for breakfast. the look on brennan's face was sooooo sad. proof he was listening when cam told him to be careful.

lucygg

Anonymous said...

oh, one more thing.

booth wasn't suddenly in love with brennan because of brain damage. he loved her before. but it seemed an impossibility. he's a guy with lots of discipline, he didn't allow himself to dwell on that possibility, it would only make him nuts. only her book, the story SHE told him from her heart let him see it was possible, and let free the bonds on his heart. heh heh, it's her fault!

cam has totally known something was up with him and bones since the end of 'the girl with the curl.' it's how she could immediately reply that he was in love with bones.

well, that was two more things. i should really stop now.

Jessica said...

Sorry I meant To Hopeless romantic and not Yo :-)

Jessica said...

Oh where's my brain at (still at the 1st episode of Bones I guess) I meant Hopeful Romantic sorry

I think this coming season will let us see a lot of romantic and tension filled scenes between Booth and Brennan like anonymous said the 'I got you baby' and the almost kissing moments and as Avalon said to Booth : Everything will work out in the end made Booth smile a little smile (sigh) and left Brennan curious about what was going to work out, I think that Booth has gotten more confident in this episode that there could be something building up between him and Brennan and yes I have also noticed that Brennan acts a little different, she seems a little softer and flirtier even admitting to Avalon that the idea of manipulating her in scratching the suspect (don't remember his name) was irrational.
I do think they are in love for a long time already and for Cam to jump to that conclusion during her conversation with Booth in the bar shows that she suspected it already, so from before the whole brain thing the dream just gave Booth the awareness of his feelings they are a lot stronger now I think

Sveva said...

I really liked that episode, it is fantastic to have Bones back!
Someone asked how it is possible that everyone knew about the dream and the alternative life, if Brennan deleted the book.
I have thought of an explanation: at the beginning of the episode Angela said that Booth actually thought he and Brennan were married for some days after the surgery. Then of course Brennan would have had to explain that she had written a book and read it to Booth and that in the book they were married. I think if would have been very funny to watch her say that! :D
That is the only thing I can think of.
I was disappointed too for the lack of bandages\scars on Brennan's arm.

gabriel said...

Sveva - thanks for the explanation, I like it (I was the one who asked). Yeah, and the two of them had such a guilty look on their faces when Angela mentioned the pregrancy thing in Brennan's office... LOL

Anonymous said...

Lucygg,

Your explanation rocked. I am 110% (like Booth) with you on it.

Anonymous said...

I always thought that Booth is surpassing his feeling for bones because he doesn't think that they are equals and hence there is no way that they can match.

In this episode because of his faulty memory he has forgotten about her fame and money. That's why he wanted to tell her how he feels. But as soon as he remembers the social gap between them, he might go back to his corner again.

olivia said...

Has anyone discussed yet the book Brennan was writing? I had assumed she was writing the book about "random characters" and Booth's brain added himself and Brennan in the lead roles and the other squints as supporting characters? Is this what everyone thinks?

Did they explain why she deleted it?

And why did Booth "hear" Hodgins as the narrator?

Sorry, I like to pick apart this stuff:-)

Stephanie said...

Olivia, that's sort of what I assumed, too. I assumed that she was writing about random characters and then somewhere along the way, realized she was basically thinking about herself and Booth in those roles, and she deleted it all because it was just too overwhelming for her to think about. As for Booth, I kind of thought that the narration was what Brennan was actually writing, while everything else was Booth's visual interpretation of Brennan's story, so I'm not sure Booth would've "heard" the narration.

Since Brennan has always strongly stuck to the fact that Andy is not Booth and her other fictional characters are not based on her real-life colleagues, I couldn't see her purposely sitting down and writing about herself and Booth like that. I think she would've realized what she was doing after she had already written at least some of it. And then deleted it once she realized what she was really writing about.

BB Shipper said...

*sigh* You guys are gonna make me watch this whole episode for the 4th time aren't you? (Oh well...its a sacrifice I must make ) ;o)

Jessica said...

BB Shipper, I know I´ve already watched it for the 10th time and I still keep seeing new things after reading this post again and reading all the different explanations from everyone, well it gets me through the day ;-)
I'm already excited for the new episode 4 days is a very long wait

gabriel said...

If I think about your interpretation of Brennan writing the book, then the revelation struck her at the point when the wife tells her husband she is expecting a baby... and what Brennan wanted so much at the time was Booth's baby, so yeah, she might just realized she wrote it all about themselves (I suppose that just like the bar being called 'The Lab' was not only Booth's imagination, Brennan must have shaped every character in the book on the people she knew - as it had been pointed out a cuple times before).
But all in all I think you can't explain every bit in that episode, it was more of a joy ride for the actors to play than a perfect piece of puzzle fit in the whole Bones picture.

Anonymous said...

Here is my take on this season:

Booth was and is in love with Brennan but his brain shout down his heart for several reasons. That's why his brain's scan didn't show any love emotions before the surgery. During his coma, he was listening to the story without any pre-assumption about the situation. So he freely explored the idea of loving Brennan. After coma, he couldn't remember the constrains because of his faulty memory, so he cautiously discovers the love that he blocked for so long.

As his memory is coming back, we are going to learn along side of him the problems with his love. The things like; money and IQ differences that indicates social gaps and partner things that implies forbidden love. Eventually by the end of season, Booth will recover completely and we will be at the same spot as we were before with one major improvement. Booth and us all won't have a doubt about his loyalty to his love and principals.

I know what you mean anonymous, talking about obsessed I must have watched it a million times and the butterflies keep flying I just love this episode ! I just love Bones !

To Rosi- I agree I also think that Booth has always been in love with Bones but has pushed it away because of the partnership and differences and the dream made it so real for him and had him thinking how good it could be, I think love doesn't show on a scan it comes from the heart and I think deep down inside Bones loves him to but she is so rational and overthinks everything so much she doesn't allow herself to love Booth, maybe it's because of her trust issues but I hope we get to see more of these flirty, romantic, will they, won't they kiss moments (sigh) I'm soglad Bones is back, couldn't live without it :D

Anonymous said...

i totally agree with the people who say gordon gordon was talking about bones and not booth when he said one of them is aware of their feelings. i had thought it was booth's because he always had those sweet monologues about being in love and knowing its the right person... but i was thinking about other episodes and like the one where she asked if he would like her better as a man and he said yes... if he were in love with her, i definitely think he would have said no. and plus, in the hospital, when she wrote her book, we now know that the reason he dreamed of them being married was because she was reading it to him... girls don't write that kind of stuff about real people unless they are in love with them. so, i'm excited about this new angle they put on it and where its going to go. season 5 is here!

Lisa said...

Hi everyone, I just discovered this blog today and it's great! Nice to know others are as obsessed as I am!

LOVED this episode - "I got you, baby" almost made me cry. Also loved last season's finale - I got such immense satisfaction at seeing the two of them in a loving marriage, even though I knew it was in Booth's head.

RE: What Sweets did, I really thought it was Booth whom Sweets (and Gordon Gordon) could see was aware of being in love. In that scene at the end of MAYHEM ON A CROSS, it is Booth who is acting like he's in love - admitting something from his childhood which he never wants to acknowledge - he does that for Bones, not Sweets, because he can't deny her when she gives him that look. And then despite his angst over admitting it, the first thing he does is ask her if she's okay, and then tries to touch her hand when she puts the handkerchief back in his pocket. Also his eyes start to tear up and his voice gets strained when Bones tells her story about being locked in the trunk of a car. (And don't forget that Booth explains to Bones why they can't ever have a romantic relationship at the end of THE MAN IN THE CELL.) So I was startled by Sweets acting like he didn't know that Booth was in love before the coma. You guys came up with some good interpretations, though.

Regarding the clown inconsistency, I agree with the person who said that Booth was just saying anything he thought Sweets wanted to hear so he could get back to work.

As far as Bones deleting the book she's writing in the season finale, she deletes it right after she writes a paragraph about how huge a burden it is to be in love, how painful and dangerous it can be to both participants, but how it is a burden "that gives you wings." You see her think this over, and I think she decides that it pretty much is just a burden, too big for her to want to take on, and she's afraid to test her wings, so to speak, so she deletes it. (Although as a writer I can't imagine someone deleting an entire manuscript with so little thought!)

I really would have loved a scene or two between B&B while Booth thought they were married. Oh, and I love that we get to see a somewhat lost, uncertain Booth.

Hope I didn't babble too long!

Lisa

Yes I also always thought it had to be Booth who is aware of his feelings it just shows in his little actions towards her in most of their conversations about love ahh so glas Bones is back !
