Today's Chatter Post, Special Edition

Talk about anything you want, Bones or not. However, in this post, I would like to ask a specific question (thanks to BBShipper):

Everyone knows that Brennan wrote a note to someone while trapped with Hodgins in "Aliens in a Spaceship" but no one knows what she wrote or even who she addressed it to.

That's the question here: What did she write? With that, the corresponding question of who did she write it to?

Remember, only 2 rules

well everyone would like to think it was booth she was writing to, but it was so short and i don't think she would write i love you, so... maybe she just said to booth, don't blame yourself, i don't or something like that because he would blame himself for the rest of his life for letting her die and she knew that i think. i really wish we could find out though... and if we do, i hope it's something more exciting than i think it is

I've wondered if any of it included something to Russ...probably via Booth. I'd love to know someday, but only if it fits in a storyline. Otherwise it would seem odd to bring it up out of the blue.

Dijea said...

I think it was to Booth - but I think it was a Thank you. For getting her out of the lab or working with her or helping her out of her shell. Maybe all of the above. It was not an I love you. She still hasn't worked that out in her head I think.

gabriel said...

I would say it was definitely Booth - I mean who else could it be? At this point in the Bones-history, probably Booth is the only person closest to representing family for Brennan(probably Angela too, but I don't think she would write her last note to Angela), as Russ and Max are still the ones who disappointed her. Especially that - as far as I remember - Brennan thought Booth would never give up looking even if their time was up. That said, I have absolutely no idea what she wrote to him and I am pretty sure we will never find out for real. But I am also interested in guesses!

gabriel said...

and a very gross afterthought: another reason why it would probably be addressed to Booth is that he would be the likely one to find her corpse and Brennan is always rational in that sense... (sorry)

Lisa said...

I think she wrote to Booth as the one to pass along the message to Russ, her Dad, Angela etc. I agree with anonymous 2:13. I think she would have said that she didn't want Booth or any of the others to blame themselves. I think she would have written how important the others have been in her life. I don't think she would have said that she loved Booth. But, maybe, she would have said that her life has been enriched by knowing him.

On a side note: I noticed a slightly trivial thing while watching Passenger in the Oven. You know, the part where Sweets said the mice are playing while the cat is away...and Cam says she is the cat. Did anyone notice that Cam is wearing a cat pin. I love little trivial things like that.

So of course I go all out for the fluffy stuff but I have seen Brennan be very emotionally open in rare instances and this would be a highly emotional situation. I also know she is a writer ...so I think she would say:

"I know you will not stop looking, but if you dont find us in time, If you are not able to save me ....know that you were on time in saving me in all the other ways that mattered.

Thank you for enrinching my life. Tell Russ, my Dad and all our squints that I love them, and for what I hope you could see, I loved you.

Bones"

Hey! a girl can hope right!?

olivia said...

@bbshipper- I would love to think that is what it said *swoon*, but I agree with everyone. I think it was more likely a thank you and don't blame yourself. maybe also something about the "faith" she had in him, baby!

bbshipper said...

@Olivia - Oh absolutely! My brain TOTALLY agrees with you and everyone else.

But in the words of GGW the heart wants what it wants right? So that is what my heart wants for these two characters ;0)

Jeannie said...

Wow, we all seem to agree on that note. I always thought it was a simple "This is not your fault." to Booth, too.

olivia said...

@bbshipper: LOL- you are correct!:) And I always appreciate a GGW quote

gabriel said...

i am COMPLETELY satisfied with bbshipper's version ;o)

Kate said...

I think it was to Booth and it simply said, "I knew you'd find us." I think it works well within the episode and the universe up to that point. It's short and poignant without being overly sentimental It's their mid-Season Two relationship in a nutshell.

jenny said...

I agree on the "it's not your fault-don't blame yourself-thank you" version.Even though I'm one of the (few) people that think Brennan knew how she felt for Booth since late S2(she wouldn't have denied Sully's invitation or looked at Booth's direction when Sully asked her"Tell me what is holding you here" if she didn't,imho)I think that in Aliens she wasn't yet in that stage were her feelings had formed in clear, specific words(even more, those words being "I love you",since she doesn't believe in love,as in being in love, until now-at least according to what we heard on Cinderella).

My romantic self loves BBshipper's version,though ;)

Anonymous said...

Where B and B are now is not where they were mid season 2, so I go with the others here: she would have wanted Booth to not blame himself if they weren't found in time, and she would have wanted to say something to Ange for sure and maybe her dad and Russ. That's my guess.

MY fantasy when I think of the angst possible with a Gravedigger trial episode isn't about how it might affect the B/B relationship but how it might shake up Angela and Hodgins. Going back to where THEY were emotionally then might make something happen for them now. Y'think?

Very,VERY good point!

Loving Kate's idea! That'd be so Brennan.

I love all the comments on this topic! I agree with the "don't blame yourself", but also wish for *bbshipper* version! LOVE IT!

On a side note, I REALLY appreciate the civility and support and kindness and enthusiasm and friendship on this site. I read other site comments where people are just super rude. I really love this site for a TON of reasons, not the least of which is the comments section! Thanks Wendy and everyone else! :)

bbshipper said...

@Jenny and @Anon ~~~ Awww you guys are so right about the progress of Brennan's feeling thinking temporally...she totally would not have been there yet... I was writing based on maybe where they are now...

So my response fits more firmly now into the dreaming/shipper fantasy realm.

Dont get me wrong though! I love residing there! lol!

Jessica said...

well nothing more to add really most is said in other comments I also think its addressed to Booth where she thanks him for trying to find them because she knows he never gives up and thanking him and not to feel quilty because she knows he tried everything to find them I wouldn't mind an I Love You in there but I don't think she would admit it so soon not in the romantic way yet but as a partner/friend

Anonymous said...

I agree that she would have written the note to Booth because he is the one that she believed would never stop looking for her, and thus would be the one to find her remains (including the note).

As far as the contents of the note go, I agree that it wouldn't be too long-winded given the circumstances. Maybe something like:

"Booth, thank you for helping me rediscover the meaning of family. Though death is inevitable (please don't blame yourself for mine), it's that much easier knowing that I left a mark on those who matter most to me. Know that you, and everyone else, left a mark on me, too. Make sure they know that...please. Sincerey, Dr. Temperance Brennan ('Bones')"

Hmmm...guess that's longer than I expected. I figured she'd sign her full name so it would make identifying her remains that much easier. :)

luscious said...

Well I hope that most peoples comments would in fact sum up the note. I also think this may have been to booth but at a time where justice was important to Brennan I could actually see her giving over some clues to the gravedigger case. however I would hope that her final note to someone when her life was in danger would be one of feeling and even at this time booth was clearly becoming the most important person in her life and for that i think she would have thanked him.

One of my favorite parts of Bones is that small, minute details come back. This was an important moment (not to mention one of the best episodes:)) so I am positive it will eventually be brought up.

I like to think that whenever what Brennan wrote is revealed, this will be the big turning point in their relationship.

"I love you" or "I'll miss you" both sound a bet too cliche. But I have total faith that the writers will come up with something that completely satisfies our B&B obsessiveness. :)

(Hey, interesting thought: Did Hodgins see what she wrote? Also, I wonder if maybe the writers have known what she supposively put down all along?)

Vanessa said...

This was a great idea for a post! I think almost everything has been said. I believe Brennan would adress her note to Booth as well, not only because he'd be probabilly the one who would find her but because he was already then the closest person to her. On the other hand, I think the note would be meant for everyone at the Lab, she would thank all of them for being her family. Like Booth tells her in The Veredict in the Story (if I'm not wrong) "There's more than one kind of family" and I would say she felt that already in mid season 2.

She would also mention Russ and Max.

I'm prety sure she wouldn't say she loves Booth, not then...but I like your version, BBShipper! =D

Jayme said...

I think, as most everyone else does, that she wrote to Booth.....It had to be Booth at that point in time, in show history, the 2 people closest to her were Angela and Booth. It couldn't have been her dad, because she hadn't even seen him yet ( aliens in a spaceship was pre judas on a pole)I veto'd Russ only because she was just reparing her relationship with him and I doubt he'd be foremost on her mind. I'm vetoing Angela as well because she knew that Hodgin's had already written her. In my mind it had to be Booth especially since she had such "faith" in him that he would find them. What she wrote? probably that she knew he did everything he could to find them and that it's not his fault, not so sure Brennan was in an "I love you" place at the time that letter was written. But I'm sure it's fluffy as hell LOL

Cheryl said...

@ Gabriel

That's not gross...it's just a statement of fact. I can't imagine Seeley Booth NOT finding Temperance Brennan...he couldn't give up on finding her. It'd haunt him.

@BBShipper
ur heart wants what so many of us want;) That said, I don't think she'd wax quite that eloquent at that point in her r'ship with Booth.

@ Kate
I buy ur version of what she could have written.

@ Jenny
Really? I mean, with BB I never really know cuz they're so good at denying what they really feel. I just figure it'd be hard to be happy in a r'ship with Sully while knowing that she was in love with Booth & having the BoothLove be strong enuf to keep her from following Sully. I can buy that Booth is the reason she didn't follow him but I don't think she was fully conscious of that fact at the time.

@historynut
Be still my beating heart. Hodgela back together? :D

@Pua
Yea...one more reason to love OWB ;)

Deanna said...

Booth, thank you for being there for me.

Fê said...

Guys, I like the "thank you" idea best.
Now, getting a little out of topic, can anyone tell me wich episode has that scene from the opening where B&B "hug" aganist the wall?
Thanks a lot.
Really nice site.

Cheryl said...

@ Fe
The Science in the Physicist...near the beginning of the ep when Vincent & Jack's experiment goes awry & explodes, so Booth was protecting Bren with his body (love that man!).

Fê said...

That was fast! I´ll rewatch it now.
Thanks Cheryl

I always thought it should have been a note to Booth maybe something like don't blame yourself. But I have also felt like it could have been to Zack, just because she is always the teacher and maybe she would have found a teachable moment in the experience.

@Wendy the kick ass creator of the OWB .... did I say that THANK YOU for posting this discussion?

If not:

THANK YOU for always being open to suggestions from us crazy fans (really just this one crazy fan) - it is always fun to hear everyone's perspective....its always do different and interesting.

I totally agree with BBShipper. Thx!

I love Kate's "I knew you'd find us" idea. That, to me, seems more likely than some kind of declaration of love or something like what most people write in fanfiction. I actually kind of hope that, if they ever do it on the show, it's more like what Kate suggested and not the kind of overly sentimental notes you often read in fanfiction. I'm not sure that would make much sense for season 2 B&B (though I know David wanted them to kiss in that episode, haha.)

I also like the idea of the notes being brought up again to further Hodgins's relationship with Angela, rather than Brennan's with Booth. "Aliens in a Spaceship" was pretty much the episode where Angela decided to give their romantic relationship a shot, so that would probably bring up more feelings between Hodgins & Angela than it would between Booth & Brennan.

Cheryl said...

I agree with Stephanie. Gosh...wouldn't it be great if Angela was now at a place to realise how awesome Hodgins is & how right he is for her?

Anonymous said...

I think that Brennan wrote to both Booth (thanks for looking, not your fault). Also, I think that she wrote to Angela about Hodgins and how much he loved her.

jenny said...

@Cheryl I'm not saying she was 100% concious about that feeling yet. But,if you combine Priest in the Churchyard(GG's findings, what each of them told GG,how Brennan reacted when he told her "Be one with him"...)with Boneles Bride(especially that scene I mentioned, where Sully asked her "tell me what's holding you here",she side-glances at Booth through the interrogation room mirror. For me,it was so telling that the first time I watched the ep,I thought Sully would understand too.Even if it was not a 100% concious move, she did look at Booth) then I think you'll see there is a point.

I always believed that the writers had the BB evolution going on a faster pace in the first two seasons and then sometime during S3 and mostly from the beggining of S4,they decided to slow things down, even go a few steps backwards, since it had turned out that the series woulg go on for more seasons.Imo,sometimes S2 Brennan appears to be much more aware of her feelings(even if that feeling was mere attraction, back then, not love yet) than the "ignorant" Brennan we saw in some episode of S4.I can understand the writers' decision completely. But that doesn't make me change my mind about what we saw in S2 or early S3.Do you think Brennan would agree with Booth abut "breaking the laws of physics" in Death in the Saddle if she wasn't aware she had feelings for him?Even if she hadn't yet formed the idea that her feelings were love in her head, his speech then helped a lot in that direction! ;) And,imho,in that scene, even if she might not be thinking "I love this man" when she agrees and gives him that look she does, she most probably is thinking "Maybe this man can show me how that feels, some day".
What do you think?

P.S. I'll join the others in saying a big big THANKS to Wendy! :)

I hope someone will answer this yet. Does anyone own the season 1-4 boxset Bones? I don't have any Bones dvds yet and I wonder if it's better to buy them separately or together in the boxset version... any info on that? thanx.

luscious said...

@ Gabriel Hi I dont own season 1-4 in the boxset but I have all the four seasons on DVD I found that you can get season 1 and two at a reduced price from some shops and now with season 4 being out I am sure you would get season three at a reduced cost you just need to look about. I would love all the seasons in 1 boxset but it really depends on your financial position what is best for you. good luck in your shopping another thing you could do is be very vocal about wanting these dvd's and someone might get you them as a Christmas present thats what I did with some other boxsets I wanted but I bought bones on my own.

Cheryl said...

@ Jenny
You raised a few points that I hadn't thought of. So yea, we're on the same page as far as Bren having these feelings in S2 even tho she wasn't fully aware of them. I always assumed she agreed with breaking the laws of Physics becuz she saw Booth's point. I'd also say that she had never experienced the intimacy that Booth was describing. As to whether or not it crossed her mind to have him show her...no comment ;)

Anonymous said...

Concerning the purchase of season 1-4 on dvd, just enter "bones season 1 4 dvd" in Google and you will get several options. Current price seems to be about $50.

Stephanie said...

Gabriel, I don't have the boxset, either, but depending on where you live, it may not really be a boxset. I know here in the US, Amazon has a page where you can buy all the seasons (or at least the first three) together, but that's all it is. Just the individual seasons bought at the same time. Nothing extra special or anything, not even different packaging. So it really depends on what you can afford. If you can afford to get all the sets at once, go for it, but if not, you'll probably be seeing some holiday deals on the seasons soon. Bones goes on sale quite frequently.
