Worth the read, @harthanson's keynote speech

This transcript of Hart Hanson's keynote speech in Edmonton about a month old now, but if you haven't seen it I think it's very much worth the read if you are at all interested in many of the philosophies that are behind Bones, some of the scenes we have watched, his own history, or what it takes to write and run a TV show.

There is a little bit of spoiler stuff in there. It is about Booth and Brennan and one thing he will do this season. It is nothing at all surprising. 95% of the speech is about other things though, so it is up to you.

Not sure if I can discuss the spoiler content here? but on the one hand he seems to say something will never happen because he doesn't want to lose his audience, and on another hand he says if he's a good show runner something WILL happen by the end of the season....or am I wrong?

I think Mr. H deserves an A+ for candor. He is quite open that, in order to have a mass market appeal show, which is his objective in Bones, the writer must appeal to the existing, contemporary social mores and affectations of the audience. In other words, he has to push their sterotyped buttons. This takes precedence to writing a coherent story as in a novel. He is convinced, and the rating history would suggest he is correct, that the mass audience loves the tease of the WTWT plot vehicle. This does not mean every fan will appreciate it but, as the record shoes, they keep watching and that is the ultimate product in his business. His point on prefering to write to a known end point also rings true to me. This eliminates the need to keep the tease going indefinitely by defining the resolution date and freeing the writer to work to that timing. Much of what they are writing now makes a great deal of sense to me. I suspect they are writing to an end of season 6 end point.

I live in Edmonton so I had a chance to go to it. He did have a few hints but they weren't very spoilery. Essentially at the end of the 100 ep Brennan will have a realization about her feelings. (he implied didn't out-right state, but it was clear). Also he was given some sort of mandate from the network on where the show had to be for the end of the season. So I expect some sort of hook-up in the context of which he said it.

djackio,
A MANDATE, you say? I'm going to choose to view that as a huge ray of light shining through the dark clouds in the spoilers for post ep-100.
A realization from Brennan would be more than I expected, and a wonderful gift for episode 100 as well.

i found the magnum pi comments very interesting. a favorite show of my youth -- and just thinking of that leads to what an improbable but nice nod to that series would be if bones could find a way to cast dana delany.

very interesting article and, for me, spoiler friendly.
