Bones and Castle

I know a lot of you out there are Bones fans (otherwise you wouldn't be here...) AND Castle fans. Since day one, people have been talking about the comparisons and similarities between the two shows. Now, there is finally a "smackdown" (albeit subjective, according to their own words) about what's to like about each of the shows and how they compare.

Remember, there isn't anything at stake here, so let's keep the comments nice and just enjoy the fun of more publicity for our favorite show(s)!

Castle is rapidly becoming my favorite TV show. This is from somebody who was a Bones fanatic, and thought that no show could ever supplant Bones in her heart. The two lead actors are attractive, although not as attractive as DB and ED. The stories are always interesting, and at least on Castle, they don't write the lead actress as being an non emotional dunce.

castle is good, but too "standard" TV. the layering of characters in bones is amongst the very top of american TV. castle is "easier" to watch. i've not had any interest in re-watching a single castle -- i've watched some bones eps 10 times.

if castle fleshes out here in the next season and a half it's going to be very good. however, i don't think there's enough to work with to really reach the level bones works at.

i guess i can put it as i like castle as a friend, but i love bones :)

yeah, i enjoy Castle a lot. i think Nathan Fillion is f-ing hilarious and also (i know i'm gonna get hit for this) more physically alluring than DB. Stana Katic, however is no ED, and chillip is right, it's not deep enough yet. i'll go with a food analogy: Castle is a twinkie, Bones is a full-on seven layer chocolate fudge forest cake.

I watch both. There's a lot to love abt Castle. Castle is both a doting father but also a player, Alexis is a very mature teen who practically raises herself...I love her maturity. & the interplay between Castle & Beckett is by turns hilarious, flirtatious & crime-savvy. I also love Ryan & Esposito. But Castle is light & fluffy whereas Bones is (ironically, given the name) meaty.

To quote Erin "Castle is a twinkie, Bones is a full-on seven layer chocolate fudge forest cake."

Bones' characters r so well-developed I root for all of them. I'm genuinely intrigued by Arastoo as he straddles both religion & science, I practically screamed when Lance proposed to Daisy, I was heartcrushed when we found out Lance was an abused child, I may marry VNM;), I adore Wendell & am looking fwd to him having his own gf, I Love Mom!Cam & I'm-too-sexy-for-this-job!Cam etc etc etc.

And the cases on Bones r always unusual. & I love how rich the science is (Castle relies very heavily just on detective work).

And I would consider re-watching all the seasons this summer (preferably with my non-Bones friends, in a blatant effort at mass conversion) an EXCELLENT use of time.

If we are talking about the Bones of seasons 1-3, in my opinion, they were significantly superior to the current Castle. If we are referencing the recent post whiplash episode (100th) of Bones which essentially told me all that went before was a lie and come on, Castle wins me over hands down. We appear to be coming up on a moment where the two shows may diverge in a significant way with Bones' mindless dedication to the tease likely to roll on for another 20+ episodes while Castle may provide some sort of resolution their tease going into season 3. It will be interesting to see how that plays out in the ratings. Put another way, the spark I came to love about Bones is dying while the spark in Castle may be about to shine. Who knows.

@erinskaya, Fillion more attractive than Boreanaz. You can't be serious.

I have yet to watch an episode of castle, but it has been so highly recommended by some serious bones fans that I must check it out. In fact, this is what I plan to do with the summer hiatus :) I am no casual TV watcher (LOL) if I am going to watch, i have to start with the pilot. I'll catch up pretty quick :)

I agree with Debbie. I use to love Bones, but I now have a new love. Castle this season has been a better show. It reminds me of Bones in the early seasons.

i watched castle over the course of about 10 days, starting during the hiatus i believe. it's good and compelling but not particularly deep. the focus is primarily on the main characters which is what i expect some folks like so much. that's an easier task. and you can tell from watching the first season that it was very much a rushed "homage" to bones. the minor characters are almost cartoonish in the first season.

castle found its legs in the second season and has improved the overall feel of the cast, but it's still too close to american formula tv to me -- which is what separates it from bones.

as i said i like castle fine and i'll keep watching it. but i don't see it hitting the powerful moments bones does -- at least for me. (like the slow dance scene from queen bee. anyone else finding themselves watching that over and over again? you can't get to that moment without great writing over the course of several seasons -- and great acting.)

@ anon 2:28: lol, sorry, nobody's perfect and there's no accounting for taste. i find Seeley Booth disturbingly attractive, but not DB. i had the same problem with Fox Mulder vs. DD.
@ aardvark508...i totally get your point, but to me it feels like Castle started with the silliness of Bones s4-5 and where is it gonna go from there? with Bones, the rich foundations built in s1-3 allow me to let it just be silly for a little while.

I watch both shows and I don't find them comparable at all.

There are two things that love about Castle, the cases are very intriguing and the continuity is awesome; they often refer back to earlier episodes. As for the cases I think it's easier for Castle than Bones because they rely on standard detective work and don't have to come up with fancy and exciting science as well.

However, I couldn't care less if the two leads on Castle got together or not. They strike me as two people who would be fine on their own or with other people if things didn't work out between them, and there is no heavy emotional baggage (well, aside from Beckett's family past). I don't find myself watching each episode closely to find out if it draws them together more, whereas I feel that Brennan and Booth complete each other and need to be with each other because no one else will do (regardless of the current state, sigh).

All good comments, people. (Though, of course, I must strongly disagree with Nathan Fillion being hotter than DB).
I watch both shows and that's honestly one of the drawbacks to Castle for me. I don't find Fillion attractive at all. Funny, yes. Endearing, yes. Attractive, no. DB on the other hand...
Another problem I have with Castle is that (it seems to me at least) he is always the one to make the break-through in the case. I realize he had to prove his usefulness at first, but he's done that. Now she's beginning to look stupid in comparison and that just ticks me off because Beckett is not stupid.
As for the relationships of the leads, let's see who will be the first to be brave enough to break the UST. I'm so much more invested in B&B and I'm really rooting for them, but I'm also losing patience and wouldn't mind one bit if Castle showed them how it's done.

I don't really think it is fair to compare these two shows. I know a lot of people think they are very similar, but I appreciate them separately. The shows have a couple of basic similarities, and in my mind a lot of differences. Also, Castle is just ending its first full season, since last season it started later in year. Bones is finishing its fifth full season. In that alone, it is not a true comparison. I happen to enjoy both shows and don't really compare them at all. However, if I had to pick a favorite, it would be Bones hands down. Castle if very entertaining, but I've never rewatched an episode either, and I've seen some Bones episodes 3 or 4 times and would watch them again right now!

I also watch Castle. I'm happy Nathon Fillion found a good show which seems to showcase his comedic talents. Though, my favorite part of Castle is his relationships with his mom and daughter. Sadly, I don't feel any chemistry between him and Beckett.

I think these show are different enough from each other. It kinda makes me sad to see them compared.

I've never felt they should be compared. I enjoy them both for completely different reasons.

Chillip makes great points about the differences.

Wow.... Why so little feedback on the episode.

This episode was the last two, awkward. The chemistry between BB is still absent, and the Cam side story did not appeal to me. Case wise, the killer's motives were unclear and they never reveal how did the body end up in the washer.

After watching this episode, I deleted from my Tivo.

As for Castle, I'm really enjoying the show. It has the vibe of early Bones. Ryan and Eposito are funny, Castle's daughter is adorable, and B&C relationship is starting to grow on me.

I like Castle. It and Bones are both quirky crime shows. I appreciate them both in their own right, for different reasons.
But Bones has my heart.
This competition bothers me when it takes about meta-ness. How does Castle win? So what if they wrote a book by Castle, its so much cooler that Brennan writes about Reichs and vice versa.
When it comes to family trees, Booth had an abusive father and Brennan was abused while in foster care after being abandoned by her parents. Castle and Beckett each had one loving parent. How could they win at that one?
Bah. At least Bones wins.

anyone find it kind of funny the amount of guest star crossover we see with bones, ncis, and castle?

of course, don't go looking too hard for information about some of those guest stars, or you'll hit spoiler info about other shows :0

Wendy said...

You are always sticking your eyes in the wrong place, aren't you? :) It's an unfortunate assumption that everyone who looks for information online wants spoilers, though, so it's easy to do.

chillip said...

indeed it is, wendy. what was it about curiosity and cats? :)

i'd remembered seeing some guest star lists for a certain tuesday night show. i nearly missed the epi summary while looking at just the guest star list...

I love both shows. If I had to choose between them, I choose Castle. It's strange, but over the course of this season my Bones love has wane while my Castle love has grown. The stories fresher, the cases are more interesting, and C&B haven't annoyed me as much as B&B with the tire will they / won't they story. Castle is also winning the ratings war; top 20 show last week with 10.4M viewers and 10.8M for last night's show, a million viewers more than Bones.
