The End in the Beginning vs. The Beginning in the End

KorbiTV has joined what fans have been doing for weeks: head-to-head competition between last year's and this year's season finales, which one wins?

Our pick: "The Beginning in the End." Yes, we realize that's probably not the most popular choice, but before you yell at us in the comments section, hear us out, okay?

"The End in the Beginning" had a purpose. We get that. Not only did fans get to see most of their favorites together in one place, but the writers and actors got to play with their characters in a way that would otherwise be impossible. The AU personalities all bared similarities to their real life counterparts, but they were different enough to be convincing as new characters. And we did get to see some of those AU traits/factors cross over to "Bones"' "real" world this season.

However, in terms of actual consequences, the only ones who really felt the impact of the 2009 season finale were Booth and Brennan. They were the ones who shared the experience of the dream/book. But things like the quip about Zack being stupid enough to go to prison for a murder he didn't commit or Jared's feelings for Brennan were never brought up again. Even the AU pregnancy revelation was just barely touched upon in the season premiere and then dropped. [Editing out the spoilery bits]

With "The Beginning in the End," everyone was impacted. Everyone. Hodgins and Angela are leaving their jobs for a year. Daisy and Sweets split up. Booth is going to a war zone. He and Brennan are leaving each other! Cam has been abandoned by her team. Every single character will come back different. It's scary, but it's true. Might not be huge shifts, but they'll have a year of independence, so there are bound to be changes.

While "TEitB" had its fun moments, we're still not sure if it was "finale" worthy. With the extreme changes in "TBitE," it is definitively a finale. No doubt.

Read the whole article here. Be forewarned, there is a spoiler near the end of the article (noted by brackets above) about possible storylines for next season. Personally, I wonder if it's too early to state it as such a sure thing, but we'll see!

Do you agree with the assessment of the better finale? It sounds like Hart Hanson was surprised by the verdict!

i think i sensed a wee bit of sarcasm from HH.

very different episodes. both are good but i'll side with EitB. i have a soft spot for EitB -- i think it's one of the best bones epis.

i also know that opinion is a lightning rod :)

It's all right, I've got your back on that.

I agree as a finale the season four one didn't have much impacts which is really a shame coz it was a great episode

I'm with chillip. The End in the Beginning is one of my favorite Bones episodes of the entire series.

I was surprised by the verdict, too. Just judging from the fan comments I read after both finales, it seemed like The End in the Beginning had people who really hated it and people who absolutely loved it, while The Beginning in the End this year just seemed to have made everyone mad. It didn't seem as split this year to me. And I find it interesting that this year's finale is winning the poll, but most comments on the site are siding with the 2009 finale.

Also, just personally, I feel like a finale is supposed to get viewers excited for or anticipating the next season. In 2009, I could not wait for Season 5 to start. This year, I kind of don't care about Season 6, which is very, very unusual for me and Bones. I'll watch, but I'm not excited about it, so if a finale is supposed to build anticipation for the next season, The Beginning in the End didn't do it for me.

I don't think I can really pick a favorite here- I can't say either knocked my socks off as far as finales go. Did like them both very much, though.

I would have really liked some much more obvious nods to EitB in this years finale. It just makes so much sense that they would be linked, and they really weren't at all. This was the biggest diappointment to me.

I love The End in the Beginning, it is such a great episode. This years finale just made me sad and disappointed,I don't like to think about that episode.Definitely won't watch it the second time.

I agree with all of you guys. I loved TEitB, it was fun, the case was interesting, we got to see B&B together, and as Stephanie said, I couldn't wait for s5 to begin.
This year's, on the other hand, I also think it was boring...one of the few Bones episodes that I don't care to watch again. As I said before, I think that the best part was Sweets and Hodgins trying to steel that car...

The best was actually the end of this season. You realize very well, despite those who think that Booth and Bones should not be together, that they really like and now they had been thinking for years and Bones 5 years in 01 years about his relationship with Booth, it should come back resolved and start flirting with you and give you all know, right? Now that the matter will come back with baby and she wants that Booth is the father everyone knows. Not advanced at that time because of what he said and also because of the operation he did because of the tumor.

The only thing I thought after watching this year's finale was that HH's boredom with the show and characters was fully on display as has seemed obvious to me for the past two years.

What is so creative about "shaking things up" by having everyone off in different corners of the world? I think it is a lack of creativity to not be able to shake things up without such a classic plot point of removing everyone from their center: the lab and each other.

I felt literally nothing in what I think was intended to be an emotional episode. Crummy writing in nearly every scene - a few nice lines but overall - dull - the wit that used to permeate this show is long gone.

HH's boredom is more apparent to me in his treatment of the Bones character - every week, he changes her up like he's putting new clothes on a doll. I got whiplash watching what he did to that character's personality this season.

I'm now watching the first season and she was such an interesting compelling character - yes, full of her quirks, insecurities, etc but she wasn't acting like a cartoon character as she has been recently portrayed.

Let's hope something interesting comes out of this but I'm so disappointed that this show that was so beautifully written, smart in its dialogue, ability to make you care about victims - etc has turned into this - but, I just can't stop watching because there is a little part of me that remains hopeful for a glimpse of the old days.

I had long hoped for B&B to get together but HH has killed it for me and I no longer care whether they do or don't get together - for me, their moment has passed. Maybe I'll feel differently at some point - at least I hope.
